Smid's injury is being listed as an upper-body ailment, Pat Steinberg of reports.

It was an upper-body injury that kept Smid out of commission for most of December and the early part of January, so it's possible that he might have aggravated something Monday night. In any case, the Flames have already moved him back to injured reserve and have recalled Tyler Wotherspoon from AHL Adirondack for insurance on defense.

Smid (upper body) was activated from injured reserve Wednesday, Pat Steinberg of reports.

Smid has been practicing for the last few days with the team, and while he won't necessarily play Wednesday, it appears the team was comfortable in bringing him aboard as an extra defenseman. He should gradually work his way back into the lineup to play a third-pairing role, but won't offer much fantasy appeal outside of leagues that count hits and blocked shots.
