Rask has signed a professional tryout agreement with the Bruins on Thursday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet.ca reports.

This is a shocker as Rask retired from the Bruins on Feb. 9. 2022. The 36-year-old netminder spent his entire 15-year NHL career with Boston, after he was drafted in the first round in 2005 by the Maple Leafs. He has hip surgery in July of 2021 to repair a torn labrum, but he had difficulty in his return to action, as he played only four games during the 2021-22 campaign before retiring.

Rask announced his retirement from professional hockey Wednesday.

The 34-year-old Finn spent his entire 15-year NHL career in Boston, appearing in 564 regular-season games while posting a 308-165-66 record, 2.28 GAA, .921 save percentage and a whopping 52 shutouts. Rask captured a Vezina Trophy and an Olympic bronze medal in 2014, and he also partook in three Stanley Cup Finals (winning in 2011). Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman will continue to serve as the No. 1 and 2 options between the pipes in Beantown.

Rask (lower body) is set to miss at least a week after coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters the netminder "won't be practicing this week," Conor Ryan of MassLive.com reports.

Rask only re-signed with the Bruins in mid-January after dealing with a hip injury in the offseason and now finds himself sidelined once again. It's unclear if the veteran's lower-body issue is related to his hip problem. In the meantime, Jeremy Swayman was recalled from the minors and will get the start versus Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

Winnipeg took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission, but Rask stood tall the rest of the way and gave Boston a chance to complete a comeback. The 34-year-old has won two of three starts since returning to the Bruins, and he should continue alternating time in the crease with Linus Ullmark while rounding back into form.

Rask has been anything but great in his return to NHL action, allowing seven goals on 39 shots across two appearances. He'll look to shake the rust off against a Jets squad that's averaged a modest 2.83 goals for across six games in January.

Rask gave up five goals on 12 shots before being replaced by Linus Ullmark to begin the second period of Tuesday's 7-1 loss to the Hurricanes.

EDGE Analysis

In only his second start of the season since rejoining the Bruins, Rask got hung out to dry by his defense, and the goaltending switch was more to send a message to the team than about Rask's own performance. He's been alternating starts with Ullmark since being added to the roster, and if the pattern holds Rask might not be between the pipes again until Saturday against the Jets, giving him plenty of time to shake this one off.
