Kevin Poulin G NYI 1 Month

Kevin Poulin has agreed to a two-year, two-way contract with the New York Islanders.

Poulin comes with a $650,000 annual cap hit, but he'll technically only make $175,000 per season at the AHL level. We say technically because his contract comes with a guarantee that he'll earn no less than $275,000 annually, so he'll end up getting at least that amount even if he never gets called up to the Islanders.

Kevin Poulin had a night to forget Monday as the Islanders dropped a 6-3 decision to Boston.

Poulin allowed six goals on 36 shots before he was lifted for Evgeni Nabokov with about 12 minutes to play in the third period. While he had a nice stretch of play in early January, the 23-year-old has shown of late why Nabokov will take on more playing time going forward.

It was solid rebound effort from Poulin after he was shelled by Pittsburgh on Thursday. He's had some strong performances this month, but the 23-year-old is still learning what it takes to be a starter in the NHL. He will continue to get his chances while Evgeni Nabokov recovers from injury. Poulin has an 11-15-1 record along with an .894 save percentage and a 3.16 GAA.

Kevin Poulin allowed five goals in the Islanders' 6-4 loss to the Flyers on Saturday night.

The Flyers' final goal was scored via the empty net. With a 2-0 lead by the middle of the first period and then a 4-3 advantage later in the second, the Islanders should've won this game. Instead, their Achilles' heel continues to be their shoddy goaltending, as Poulin made just 26 saves. In his defense, Poulin does have three games over his last five in which he's given up two or fewer, though. On the season, he has a 3.10 goals-against average and .895 save percentage.
