Michael Sauer (concussion) was not given a qualifying offer from the New York Rangers. He has not played since suffering a concussion on Dec. 5, 2011 following a hard hit from Toronto's Dion Phaneuf. His status for next season is questionable, so he probably won't get any takers as an unrestricted free agent until he's back to 100 percent.

Michael Sauer was activated from the IL on Friday January 18.

Michael Sauer (concussion) is "not even in the conversation" for the Rangers, coach John Tortrella said. The defenseman suffered a concussion Dec. 5, 2011, in a collision with the Maple Leafs' Dion Phaneuf. Sauer has not been on the ice since. "I wish I could give you some kind of timetable on when or if he can come back, but I can't," Sauer's agent, Ben Hankinson, said. "Unfortunately it's still day to day, week to week, month to month."

"Michael has not responded that well, I'll be quite honest, and I do not think you'll see him at the beginning of the season," said Tortorella on Sunday. "That's a big hole for us. Michael played very well for us, and we certainly missed him during the playoff run. I think it's going to be a little bit of time before Michael resumes his career." Sauer has been sidelined since Dec. 5 following a big hit from Toronto's Dion Phaneuf.

There's no guarantee that Michael Sauer (concussion) will be ready for the start of the 2012-13 campaign. "It's a huge question mark," Rangers coach John Tortorella said regarding Sauer's availability. "I just saw Michael for the first time today in months. I don't have a lot of update, but it's certainly not where he needs to be even to start working out." Sauer hasn't played since Dec. 5.

Michael Sauer (concussion) has been kept off the ice for two straight days Trainer Jim Ramsey made the call to keep the defenseman from skating on Friday, but it doesn't appear as though he's suffered a setback in his recovery from a concussion. Sauer skated for three consecutive days prior to being given this time off.

Michael Sauer is making progress in his recovery from a concussion. He has been free of symptoms for the last seven to ten days and wore a non-contact jersey at practice Tuesday. "It felt great to be out there; I have to take it one day at a time, but I know it'll continually get better," he said. Sauer has been out of action since Dec. 5.
