Hanzal (back) indicated Monday that he's progressing well from back surgery and expects to be ready for the start of training camp, Craig Morgan of FOX Sports Arizona reports.

Hanzal played his last game Jan. 29 before undergoing surgery in February, with his absence weakening a Coyotes forward corps that was already woefully short on impact players. The 28-year-old, who compiled eight goals and 24 points in 37 games over the past season, is probably still in line for a second- or third-line role with the Coyotes heading into 2015-16, but will require a serious upgrade in linemates in order to attain fantasy appeal outside of deeper formats.

Coyotes GM Don Maloney announced Thursday that Hanzal is dealing with a recurring back issue that will require surgery, likely ending his season, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports. "The likelihood of [Hanzal] returning this season is remote, but we do anticipate a full recovery," Maloney said.Hanzal spent most of the past summer rehabbing his back, but continued experience repeated setbacks once the season started, appearing in only 39 of the Coyotes' 55 games to date. Though the forward should be ready to go for the start of 2015-16, staying healthy has never been his forte, as he'll have missed at least 18 games due to injury in all but one of the last five seasons. If there's a silver lining for the Coyotes, it's that the absence of one of their top scorers in Hanzal (eight goals, 16 assists) the rest of the way will improve the team's chances of earning a high selection in a 2015 NHL Entry Draft brimming with talent.

Coach Dave Tippett said Thursday that he expects Hanzal (upper body) to remain out for at least another week, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Repbulic reports.

The Coyotes had been considered Hanzal day-to-day in anticipation of his forthcoming return to practice, but he failed to progress as quickly as the team had thought. As a result, Tippett said Hanzal would be subjected to more tests and reevaluated at some point next week to see how he's come along at that time. He could be transferred to injured reserve if the Coyotes decide to recall an extra skater in the near future.

Hanzal was already questionable to return for Tuesday's contest against the Blue Jackets, but the news that his upper body injury isn't getting any better suggests he could be forced out of action for a third straight game. If he is unable to return by Tuesday, his next chance to return to the lineup will be on Thursday against the Hurricanes.
