Malhotra will hang up his skates in exchange for a clipboard after announcing he is retiring from professional hockey and looking to start coaching, Jeff Paterson of The Province reports.

Malhotra most recently played for AHL Lake Erie, but appeared in just 23 contests. Moving forward, the center will look to rejoin the Canucks organization as a coach instead. Selected seventh overall in the 1998 NHL Draft, the 36-year-old never quite lived up to expectations, with his best season coming in 2008-09 with the Blue Jackets as he tallied 35 points and 28 PIM. IN his career, Malhotra logged 991 NHL games in which he potted 116 goals.

Malhotra will join the lineup for Thursday's game against the Panthers with Alex Galchenyuk a late scratch due to the flu, TSN's Chantal Machabee reports.Malhotra has just one point in 48 appearances this season, averaging 10:40 of ice time per game. He is expected to work as the fourth-line center, and he may be back out of the lineup for Saturday's game against Columbus.

Malhotra was a healthy scratch for Tuesday night's game against Florida. Michael Bournival took Malhotra's spot on the active roster, skating on the left wing of the fourth line while Sven Andrighetto moved to center.

Malhotra won 13 of 19 faceoffs in Thursday night's 2-1 shootout win over the Capitals. Malhotra's giving Montreal exactly what the team thought it was getting when the signed the fourth-line center. He's won 24 of 35 faceoffs through two games, including 15 of 22 in the defensive zone.
