Lehtonen could be forced to settle into the No. 2 goaltending role for the Stars next season following Monday's signing of Antti Niemi, Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News reports.

On the surface, Niemi's acquisition at the trade deadline and his subsequent contract extension seems baffling, given that the Stars are paying Lehtonen an average annual salary of $5.9 million. Both Niemi and Lehtonen regressed noticeably in 2014-15, but with both goalies having to shoulder enormous workloads the last two seasons, the Stars' brain trust is hopeful that a tandem approach in the net may allow both Niemi and Lehtonen to rebound. Lehtonen is sure to see a steep reduction in the 65 appearances he made last season, but the more frequent rest should equate to stark improvement in last season's GAA (2.94) and save percentage (.903), both of which nearly represented career worsts.

Lehtonen was pulled from Friday's game against the Blues after giving up six goals on 19 shots.

A brutal night for Lehtonen, who has given up a whopping 10 goals in his last two appearances. He's been so consistently inconsistent this season that it's gotten out of hand. With two straight losses, the 31-year-old drops to 34-17-10 on the season with a .903 save percentage and 2.94 GAA. The Stars have been eliminated from playoff contention, so it wouldn't come as a surprise if the backup Jhonas Enroth sees some action in the final few games of the season.

Lehtonen was first off the ice at morning skate, making him the likely starter for Friday's game against the Blues, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.

Even with the Stars eliminated from playoff contention, Lehtonen continues to serve as the team's workhorse. He went 9-3-0 in March, but one of those losses came in his last start, when he was pulled after allowing four goals on 19 shots to the Flames.

Lehtonen was pulled after allowing four goals on 19 shots in a 5-3 loss to the Flames on Monday.

Lehtonen -- who had previously won eight of his last 10 starts -- was lit up by the Flames offense on this night. He's been one of the league's busiest goalies with 64 appearances this season, compiling a .906 save percentage and 2.88 GAA along the way -- numbers that just haven't been good enough to get the Stars into the playoffs.

Lehtonen is on track to start Monday's game against the Flames, NHL.com's Mark Stepneski reports.

Lehtonen has won eight of his last 10 games, though he has surrendered 13 goals over his last four outings. He' face a Calgary team is coming off a 5-2 triumph over the Preds on Sunday.

Lehtonen stopped 33 of 36 shots in Saturday's win over the Canucks.

While Lehtonen has won eight of his last 10 games, he's allowed at least three goals in four straight outings. While his .907 save percentage and 2.84 GAA needs work, Lehtonen's 34-15-10 record makes him a reliable fantasy option. He starts almost every game and hasn't suffered back-to-back regulation losses since late-January.
