Boychuk signed a seven-year, $42 million contract extension with the Islanders on Thursday, Arthur Staple of Newsday reports.

It was initially considered a radical idea for the Islanders to trade for the soon-to-be-free agent Boychuk in October following a losing season, but the surprising successes of both team and player prompted both parties willing to extend the union further. The $6 million cap hit is a hefty price to pay for an over-30 player in the midst of his first 30-point campaign, but even if the offense dries up by the latter end of the deal, Boychuk should still remain tough on the defensive end. With Nick Leddy agreeing to an extension a couple weeks earlier, the Islanders will now have their top defensive pairing in tact for several years to come.

Boychuk had to be helped off the ice after blocking a shot in the second period of Thursday's game against the Flyers.

Different reports indicate different injury spots, but it appears the overlying theme is that it is somewhere on his leg. The team will likely run tests on the ailing area, and report back with an update at some point in the near future, but the fact that he needed to be helped off the ice could indicate a more serious injury.

The Islanders and Boychuk have begun negotiations on a new contract, according to the Islanders Point Blank.

These negotiations aren't expected to end anytime soon but where once it looked unlikely that Boychuk would end up re-signing with the Islanders, now it may be unlikely that he leaves. The Isles have also received inquiries if they would be interested in trading Boychuk should these negotiations break down, but that seems highly improbable at this time.
