O'Brien signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Devils on Wednesday, Tom Gulitti of The Record reports.

O'Brien spent the first half of last season in the KHL before opting out of his contract and returning to North America, where he ended up sticking with the Capitals' affiliate at AHL Hersey the rest of the year. He impressed during his stay with Hershey, scoring 10 goals and 29 points in 32 games. The 26-year-old could be in line for a featured role at AHL Albany this coming season as a result, but he's unlikely to parlay it into an extended stint with the Devils.

Senators coach Paul MacLean credits the team's strong farm system as the reason Jim O'Brien didn't make the team.

O'Brien inked a two-year, one-way deal over the summer. "I think he's a casualty of the Ottawa Senators doing a good job at the draft table and doing a good job of developing players," MacLean said. "They're players that have come after him and developed and they end up being better players. That's what it is." He had five goals and an assist in 29 games last season.

Jim O'Brien has cleared waivers and was assigned to Binghamton of the AHL.

With the emergence of both Mika Zibanejad and Jean-Gabriel Pageau there was no longer a place for O'Brien in Ottawa.

Jim O'Brien was placed on waivers Thursday.

The move isn't a surprise as he was believed to be an odd-man out among a crowded group at center. The Senators also placed goaltender Nathan Lawson, forward Corey Cowick and defenseman Tyler Eckford on waivers with the intention of assigning them to the minors.

He's sits behind Jason Spezza, Kyle Turris, Mika Zibanejad, Zack Smith and Jean-Gabriel Pageau on the team's depth chart down the middle. O'Brien scored a goal off his skate in Tuesday's exhibition win over Toronto. In 29 games last season, he notched six points and 38 shots.

Jim O'Brien scored the only Ottawa goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Bruins Thursday night.

The power play marker was the fifth of the campaign for O'Brien, a figure that amazingly leads all Ottawa forwards and stands only one tally behind the injured Erik Karlsson for the team lead. Kaspars Daugavins and Zack Smith drew assists on the goal.

O'Brien scored three goals and six points in 28 games with the Ottawa Senators last season. He'll compete for a bottom-six forward spot during training camp.
