The Islanders and Mark Streit have begun "preliminary talks on an extension," according to Newday's Arthur Staple.
Streit, who was named Isles captain before last season, has a deal that expires at the end of the season. The 35-year-old has seven points on the year and the fact the Islanders are so thin on defense seems to be another reason for their interest in keeping him around. "The fact is I like it here. We have a really good team," said Streit. "I've been here five years and I have a really good role, I love the room and I can tell the improvement is here the last few years. It's maybe 5 percent we're missing to break through. Overall, I'd like to stay."
