The Avs have re-signed defenseman and former overall no.1 pick Erik Johnson to a four-year/$15 million deal. Entering his fifth year, the talented blueliner has yet to live up to his immense potential and has yet recorded a 40+point season (career high of 39 points in 2009/10). However, several circumstances- including a freak injury that cost him the 08/09 season and extremely unrealistic expectations after being drafted no.1 overall- stunted his offensive development in St. Louis. After Colorado management have shown their faith in the star-crossed defenseman by rewarding him with a lofty contract, look for EJ to answer the call and have a big come-back season. I have been wrong before about Johnson, but have a feeling he will come close to being a top-ten fantasy option in 2012/13.
