Cole has played fairly well during training camp and appears set to serve on the Pens' second defensive unit.

Cole re-signed Monday with the Penguins to a three-year, $6.3 million contract, Josh Yohe of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

The Penguins' acquisition of Cole on March 2 was one of quieter moves of trade deadline day, but it proved to be a vital one for Pittsburgh. With the team down several key defensemen due to injury late in the season, Cole came through in a big way, accruing seven points in a seven-game stretch from March 26 through April 7. The Pens' blue-line ranks should be healthier heading into 2015-16, but Cole likely solidified himself as a regular member of the team's second or third pairing due to his play.

Cole set up the Penguins' only goal in Monday's Game 3 loss to the Rangers.

Injuries to Kris Letang, Olli Maatta, Christian Ehrhoff, and Derrick Pouliot have left Cole as the Pens' top offensive threat from the blue line, and to his credit, he's been able to answer the bell thus far. Cole has recorded an assist in two straight games and has a goal and eight assists over his last 12 games, dating back to March 26.

Cole extended his assist streak to five games Tuesday night against the Senators.

The defenseman has scored one goal and six assists in his last seven contests. There's no reason to think he'll cool off, especially with Kris Letang and Christian Ehrhoff out of the lineup. The Pens used him on their top PP unit after Derrick Pouliot left Tuesday's tilt, another sign of his increased role.

Cole tallied two assists against the Blue Jackets on Saturday, giving him five points (1G, 4A) in his last five games.

With Kris Letang (concussion) sidelined, Cole represents Pittsburgh's best offensive threat from the blue line right now. He's worth a waiver grab over the last week of the regular season.

Cole picked up an assist in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Flyers.

Cole has recorded a point in three of his last four games with the Penguins, but it's probably not worthwhile to put much stock into that production. Prior to the minor spurt, Cole has supplied only four goals and six assists across 65 games, and didn't post especially notable numbers in the non-scoring categories to augment his fantasy value. He's best left sitting on the waiver wire.

Cole was traded to the Penguins on Monday in exchange for defenseman Roberto Bortuzzo and a 2016 seventh-round draft pick, Sportsnet's Mark Spector reports.

Cole has functioned mostly as a third-pairing defenseman for the Blues all season, producing four goals, nine points, and a plus-16 rating over 54 games. A similar role likely awaits for him on the Penguins, where he'll likely rotate in and out of the lineup with the likes of Simon Despres and Robert Scuderi.

Cole (upper body) will play Saturday against the Oilers, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Cole missed Thursday's game against the Jets while battling a minor injury that had plagued him over the last few days. It appears that the day out of the lineup was all Cole needed to heal up, so he'll draw back in for Chris Butler, who heads to the press box as a healthy scratch.

Cole (upper body) will not play Thursday against the Jets, Jeremy Rutherford of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Per the report, Cole -- who has notched points in two of his last three games -- has been playing through a minor upper-body injury of late. Consider him day-to-day as Saturday's game against the Oilers approaches.
