Meszaros was cut by the Avalanche on Wednesday, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Meszaros signed a PTO contract with the Avs at the start of preseason but suffered a groin injury and was never able to suit up for any of the Avs' preseason games.

Meszaros is suffering from a groin injury that has left him day-to-day, the Denver Post reports.
EDGE Analysis
Meszaros' groin injury likely occurred within the last couple days, and it has left him day-to-day at a critical time in the evaluation period. While the 10-year veteran still stands a chance at earning a roster spot, missing time certainly won't do him any favors.

Meszaros signed a professional tryout contract with the Avalanche on Wednesday.
EDGE Analysis
Meszaros, a 10-year veteran, was a bust after inking a one-year, $4 million contract with the Sabres last season, as he produced seven goals and 14 points in 60 games while spending frequent time in ex-coach Ted Nolan's doghouse as a healthy scratch. The 29-year-old has shown average to above-average scoring ability from the blue line in the past, but with the Avalanche more in need of shoring up their defense in front of Semyon Varlamov rather than adding puck movers, it's not clear if Meszaros fits in with their plans. The Avalanche will take a glimpse at him and see if he can showcase an effective two-way game in camp; if so, he could come away with a roster spot.

Meszaros notched an assist Wednesday against Toronto, extending his points streak to three games. Meszaros couldn't keep his multi-goal streak going after scoring twice in each of his past two games, but did manage an assist in a 4-3 win. The veteran defenseman played just 16:13. Buffalo faces the Blackhawks and Islanders next, so it's a good bet that Meszaros' streak will end in either of those games against tough teams. He had five points over a three-game stretch, more than one-third of the 14 points he has on the season.

Meszaros, who has scored two goals in each of his past two games, is looking to extend his streak Wednesday against Toronto, reports The Buffalo News. According to Elias Sports Bureau, Meszaros is the first Sabres defenseman to score multiple goals in consecutive games. The veteran defenseman has seven goals and 13 points in 54 games this season, three goals shy of his career-high that he set in his rookie season. He has a good chance to at least earn a point against a struggling Leafs squad with his hot hand, and could see increased ice time with Rasmus Ristolainen (illness) unlikely to dress for the game. Meszaros is a viable play in deeper leagues for poolies needing production from the back end.

Meszaros tallied two goals -- including the game-winner -- in Monday's 4-1 triumph over the Coyotes. It's the second straight two-goal performance for Meszaros, who had lit the lamp just three times in his previous 52 games this season. Though Meszaros' outburst has come far too late in the year to change the Sabres' fortunes, the impending free agent might have shown potential suitors that he still has some offensive upside to offer.

Meszaros potted a pair of goals and fired four shots on goal in Saturday's loss to Colorado. That's five goals and 11 points in 53 games for Meszaros, who's been averaging 17:38 of ice time. Don't expect much more production from the 29-year-old, as he had previously gone through a nine-game pointless drought and only has 10 shots on goal in his last nine games.

Meszaros (hand) will play in Friday's game against the Devils. Meszaros returned to practice Thursday, after missing games on Monday and Tuesday. He figures to skate alongside Nikita Zadorov on the second defensive pairing, while fellow blueliner Zach Bogosian (lower body) will miss at least one more game

Meszaros (hand) took part in Thursday's practice, Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald reports. Meszaros' participation in practice gives him a shot at playing Friday against the Devils, but the team hasn't provided an official ruling on his status just yet. The rearguard has missed the Sabres' last two games due to the injury.

Coach Ted Nolan indicated Monday that Meszaros (hand) could be forced to "miss a few games" due to his injury. Meszaros ended up sitting out Monday's game against the Capitals, and it's probably safe to rule him out for at least Tuesday's contest against the Bruins as well. The Sabres also figure to be without Zach Bogosian (lower body) on Tuesday, paving the way for AHL call-up Chad Ruhwedel to enter the lineup yet again.
