Free-agent left wing Alexander Semin agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. Semin, who totaled just 19 points in 57 games for the Carolina Hurricanes last season, reached a buyout agreement last month that will pay him $14 million over six years. The 31-year-old's time in Carolina was turbulent, as he struggled with injuries and was publicly criticized by coach Bill Peters for inconsistent effort. “[Semin’s] career can only go up from here,” agent Mark Gandler said. “He is still young. His buyout was under unique circumstances and the (Hurricanes) coach did not understand Sasha’s game.” Semin will have a great opportunity to salvage his career in Montreal, where he could find himself on the top line alongside Tomas Plekanic and Max Pacioretty, or taking on a larger offensive role on the team's second line.

Semin was placed on unconditional waivers Tuesday, and the Hurricanes are expected to buy out his contract, NHL.com reports.

Semin will be subject to waivers, and if he clears he'll be bought out by the team Wednesday afternoon. The 31-year-old has three years remaining on the five-year, $35 million extension he inked with Carolina in March of 2013. Semin tallied only six goals and 13 assists in 57 games this past season.

Semin registered a goal on one of his game-high eight shots on net in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Sabres.

The Hurricanes blitzed the net all night, with Semin providing eight of the 52 shots the team put on Sabres goalie Anders Lindback. Active games like Monday's show what the 31-year-old is still capable of, but unfortunately, performances like this have not occurred nearly enough. With 19 points, a minus-10 rating, and several healthy scratches on his ledger, Semin might be the biggest fantasy bust this season.

Semin (hamstring) is slated to play Sunday against the Bruins, Michael Smith of the Hurricanes' official site reports.

With Semin, who missed Saturday's game, back in the lineup, Brad Malone looks like the odd man out for Carolina up front on Sunday.

Semin is expected to miss Saturday's game against the Devils due to a hamstring injury, Chantel McCabe of FOX Sports Florida reports.

Semin missed the Hurricanes' morning skate Saturday to receive further evaluation on the injury, so it appears safe to count him out for at least one game. Patrick Dwyer is expected to reenter the lineup in Semin's stead.

Semin missed Friday's practice due to an undisclosed injury and is questionable to play Saturday against the Devils, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

Semin was able to break an eight-game scoring drought with a goal in Thursday's win over the Penguins, but it appears to have come at the cost of his health. Considering the extent to which Semin has struggled this season and with the Hurricanes out of playoff contention, it wouldn't be a surprise if the team decided to err on the side of caution and hold the winger out Saturday.

Semin was held off the scoresheet for the eighth consecutive game in Monday's loss to the Blackhawks.

No two ways about it - with just 16 points in 47 games, Semin's season has been nothing short of disastrous. What's more, he's currently skating on the Canes' third line and no longer sees any time on the power play. Add it all up, and you get a fantasy value that is hovering dangerously close to zero. Avoid.

Semin scored his third goal of the season in Monday's 5-2 loss to the Blackhawks.

It's been a hugely disappointing season for Semin, but he's attempting to salvage it partially down the stretch as he's tallied four points in his last five contests. Even with seven points since the start of February, the winger has just 15 points on the year, so it's likely too little too late for the 30-year-old.

Semin practiced as a member of the Hurricanes' top line Thursday, Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

He'll seemingly get the first crack at replacing Jiri Tlusty, who was dealt to the Jets on Wednesday. With only 14 points and a minus-8 rating over 35 games, Semin has been a massive bust this season, but has shown signs of life of late. He submitted arguably his best game of the season Tuesday against the Flyers, picking up two assists and leading the Hurricanes with seven shot attempts.
