Montoya (groin) will be in goal for Saturday's season finale against the Devils, Harvey Fialkov of the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports.

The Panthers' decision to send Dan Ellis back to AHL San Antonio prior to Thursday's game against the Bruins signifies that Montoya is good to go after a one-month absence due to the injury. He'll settle into a backup role behind Roberto Luongo on Tuesday, but will be rewarded with one final nod before the season ends. Even by No. 2 goalie standards, Montoya hasn't been great this season (5-7-2, 3.08 GAA, .888 save percentage), making difficult to trust him as a streaming option even against one of the league's weakest offensive attacks in the Devils.

Montoya (groin) practiced again Tuesday and is targeting a return to the crease for Saturday's season finale against the Devils, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.

Coach Gerard Gallant has already confirmed Roberto Luongo as the starter in goal for Thursday's game against the Bruins, leaving the finale as Montoya's lone opportunity to reenter the lineup. Montoya has been out for a month with the groin injury, and with the Panthers already eliminated from playoff contention, it might be a good opportunity for the backup goalie to get Saturday's nod as a reward for his hard work in rehabbing the injury. Over 19 games this season, Montoya is 5-7-2 with a 3.08 GAA and .888 save percentage.

Montoya (groin) worked out with goaltending coach Robb Tallas and strength coach Tommy Powers before the Panthers' morning skate on Thursday, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.

Montoya still hasn't been a participant in practice and with how well Dan Ellis has played in Montoya's absence (4-2-1 with a 2.11 GAA and a .922 save percentage), Montoya may be the odd man out if he returns this season at all.

Coach Gerard Gallant confirmed Thursday that Montoya will miss at least two weeks worth of action with a groin injury, George Richards of the Miami Herald reports.

Montoya thus appears on track to be placed on IR, while fellow goalie Roberto Luongo is hurting as well, but hopes to be back next week. In the meantime, Dan Ellis and Sam Brittain are in line to handle the Panthers' netminding duties.

TSN's Bob McKenzie indicates that Montoya (groin) is likely out for "weeks," tsn.ca reports.

With both Montoya and fellow goalie Roberto Luongo hurting, the Panthers' top healthy options in net currently are Dan Ellis and Sam Brittain, who were both recalled by the team on Wednesday.

Montoya, who took the loss in Tuesday's 3-2 defeat to the Maple Leafs, was forced from the game midway through the third period with an apparent groin injury, USA Today reports.

With starting goalie Roberto Luongo (neck) initially ruled out for the night after finishing out the first period with the Panthers holding a 1-0 lead, Montoya was called upon to man the net for the Panthers. Disaster would eventually strike 22 seconds into the third period, as Montoya appeared to hurt himself while scrambling to stop Nazem Kadri's game-tying goal. Knowing that Luongo had been ruled out for the game, Montoya initially tried to tough it out the rest of the way, but was rendered virtually immobile. Shortly after he conceded the eventual winning goal to the Leafs' Peter Holland at the 5:28 mark of the third period, Montoya was pulled for good. The Panthers initially appeared poised to turn to 41-year-old goalie coach Robb Tallas -- who hadn't appeared in the NHL since 2001 -- as an emergency option in the crease, but after a few minutes, Luongo eventually returned from the locker room to play the final 15 minutes. Though Luongo finished the game, it's clear that both goalies should be considered day-to-day in advance of Thursday's game against the Stars, as evidenced by the Wednesday call-ups of Dan Ellis from AHL San Antonio and Sam Brittan from ECHL Cincinnati.

Montoya was stuck with a loss Tuesday against the Leafs after entering the game for Roberto Luongo (neck). He gave up three goals on 15 shots.

Not a pretty outing for Montoya, but he could conceivably be heading for more action in goal after Luongo left this game. Although Luongo's injury was reportedly minor, the same was said of Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist's similar puck-to-the-neck incident, and he's coming up on a month out of the lineup. No one at AHL San Antonio has impressed this year, so Montoya would likely get first dibs on starts if Luongo misses time.

Montoya stopped 20 of 23 shots in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Lightning.

Montoya wasn't heavily tested until the third period, as he allowed two goals on 11 shots in the final frame. The last time the 30-year-old received a start that wasn't part of a back-to-back set for the Panthers was Jan. 4, so he may only see a few more starts this season as he backs up Roberto Luongo.

Montoya will start in goal Sunday against the Lightning, Jameson C. Olive of FOX Sports Florida reports.

This comes as no surprise, as Roberto Luongo started Saturday in the front half of a back-to-back set. Montoya was lit up for five goals on 26 shots against the Penguins his last time out and will face a tough test Sunday in the league's top scoring offense (3.25 G/GP).

Montoya surrendered five goals on 26 shots in Sunday's 5-1 loss to the Penguins.

Montoya doesn't see much action, but he had entered Sunday's contest allowing just four goals in his previous three outings so this was a step back from his recent play. Roberto Luongo will get the bulk of the starts as the Panthers make their push toward the playoffs, so Montoya's starts will likely be restricted to back-to-back sets going forward.
