Defenseman Brent Burns scored his ninth goal of the season as he and the San Jose Sharks were edged 3-2 by the Hurricanes in Carolina Friday night.
Dan Boyle, another Shark defenseman, scored his team's only other goal. It was Boyle's sixth of the season. The Sharks fell to 1-2-1 midway through their nine-game road swing and have lost five of their past seven games overall.
