The Boston Bruins weren't willing to trade off players in order to free the cap space necessary to re-sign Jarome Iginla. "We tried to work on it right from when the season's stopped, and we knew there would be challenges. At the end of the day, I really wanted to try and keep most of this group together, and I wouldn't have been able to do that to sign Jarome [Iginla]," said Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli. "Those are hard decisions that sometimes you have when you are cap challenged, but I kind of like where we are." Iginla signed a three-year, $16 million contract with the Colorado Avalanche instead. He turned 37 years old on Tuesday, but he still managed to score 30 goals and 61 points in 78 games last season.
