Browns GM Mike Lombardi said Tashaun Gipson remains the starting free safety.

The Browns used a sixth-round pick on Jamoris Slaughter, but he's coming off a torn Achilles' tendon and isn't real competition. They have also passed on free agents such as Kerry Rhodes (so far), giving Gipson a vote of confidence. He graded out 42nd among 88 qualifying safeties in Pro Football Focus' rankings last season.

Tashaun Gipson ran as the starting free safety during Browns pre-draft minicamp practices.

This is a position to which Cleveland will almost certainly add competition in the draft, but it's worth noting. Pat Shurmur's old coaching staff was high on Gipson's talent, believing he could grow into an eventual starter. Free safety is currently one of the top question marks on an otherwise underrated roster.

Pat Shurmur's old Browns coaching staff believed second-year S Tashaun Gipson could develop into an NFL starter.

Regime change obviously leads to differing opinions, but Gipson showed promise in practice as a rookie. The UDFA from Wyoming measured 5-foot-11 3/8, 206 at his 2012 Pro Day and ran a 4.61 forty with a 10-foot-2 broad jump and 35 1/2-inch vertical. The Browns are currently searching for a starting free safety.
