Dion Lewis RB CLE 18 Days

Browns RB Dion Lewis missed some of OTAs and all of June minicamp with an undisclosed injury.

Lewis "insists" the injury is not related to last August's fractured fibula, which included ligament damage in his left leg and cost Lewis the entire season. Still, Lewis could've used the reps to make an impression on a new Browns coaching staff. The Akron Beacon Journal is skeptical of Lewis' fit in new OC Kyle Shanahan's zone-running offense. He's a brittle change-of-pace back.

Dion Lewis (leg) participated in the first day of the Browns offseason program.

Lewis fractured his left fibula during the second preseason game last year and was placed on injured reserve. He heads into the final year of his rookie deal fighting with the likes of Edwin Baker and Fozzy Whittaker for a roster spot behind clear-cut starter Ben Tate.

Browns placed RB Dion Lewis on injured reserve with a broken leg, ending his season.

As expected. Lewis fractured his left fibula in the Browns' second preseason game against the Lions. There was some speculation that Cleveland could use its short-term injured reserve spot on Lewis. Some combination of Chris Ogbonnaya and Brandon Jackson will open the season as Trent Richardson's direct backup. Lewis is signed for $645,000 in the final year of his contract next season.

Browns RB Dion Lewis (broken leg) is expected to be placed on injured reserve.

Lewis underwent surgery on Monday. He was a candidate for injured reserve/designated to return, but the Browns must not be confident he'd be ready by Week 8. Cleveland has a very uncertain situation behind bell-cow Trent Richardson.

The Browns have yet to determine if backup RB Dion Lewis (broken leg) will return this season.

Depending on his timeline, Lewis could be a candidate for injured reserve/designated to return. He'd be eligible to return in Week 8 if he landed on short-term IR. Considering the state of the Browns' running back corps behind Trent Richardson, they'll likely take an optimistic view of Lewis' return timetable.

Dion Lewis suffered a fractured fibula in Thursday night's preseason game against the Lions.

Lewis was carted off the field in the second half. He had secured the No. 2 running back job with Montario Hardesty (knee scope) on the shelf, but will now likely miss at least first couple months of the season. It's a tough break for Lewis, who rushed for 55 yards on ten carries through two preseason games. Brandon Jackson is the new favorite to be Trent Richardson's top backup.

Dion Lewis has taken more first-team reps than anyone in Browns camp.

Trent Richardson has been coddled thanks to his minor shin issues and former second-round pick Montario Hardesty has missed time with hamstring/finger woes. Regardless, Lewis has played well enough to win the No. 2 job outright. "The stuff that he can bring to the table, much like a (Darren) Sproles, it's very rare you can find a smaller guy like him that moves and plays hard like him every down," Richardson said. Hardesty's roster spot is in serious danger.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer believes Dion Lewis "helped his case" to be the Browns' No. 2 running back with his preseason opener performance.

Always-injured Montario Hardesty is being left in the dust. Lewis ripped off a 31-yard kick return, gained nine yards on a carry, added 16 yards on a screen, and scored from two yards out on a reception. Lewis wound up with only 34 yards on eight touches, but provides more of a jittery change-of-pace behind Trent Richardson than Hardesty. Hardesty's roster security is waning fast.

Brown RB Dion Lewis started and rushed for 12 yards on five carries in Thursday night's preseason opener against the Rams.

Lewis also caught three passes fro 22 yards and a touchdown. The third-year back started the game with Trent Richardson (shin) and Montario Hardesty (hamstring) out of action. It was mostly a positive night for Lewis, mainly because he didn't cough the ball up; coaches have been concerned about his ball security. Lewis has a real chance to overtake Hardesty for No. 2 duties this summer.
