Torrey Smith's 39 catches last season on throws that traveled 10 yards or less in the air ranked 71st in the league.

Smith expanded his route tree in 2013, handling double teams relatively well and starting down the path of shedding a "one-trick pony" label. He'll continue that progression as the "X" receiver for Gary Kubiak, the same spot Andre Johnson handled for so long (Steve Smith will play the Kevin Walter role). The speedy Smith is unlikely to ever be a volume receiver, but he's just 25 years old, trending up in the new scheme and heading into a contract year. His receptions on short throws should rise this season.

A source tells the Baltimore Sun that extension negotiations between Torrey Smith and the Ravens haven't opened yet.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti stated at the NFL meetings Monday that "nothing would make (me) happier" than extending Torrey Smith's contract.

Bisciotti says he'd like a deal hammered out before May's draft. Smith is owed just $837,168 in 2014, so an extension would cost Baltimore salary cap space. Only 25 years old -- he just turned in late January -- Smith earned the praise of Ravens coaches in 2013 for effectively handling double-team coverage. He posted career highs in catches (65) and receiving yards (1,128).

ESPN Ravens blogger Jamison Hensley thinks the team could approach Torrey Smith about a contract extension this offseason.

Smith has one year left on his rookie deal and is a prime candidate for a new deal. He's appeared in all 48 regular-season games since being drafted and set new career-highs in catches (65) and yards (1,128) this past season. Smith could command at or above $10 million annually. The Ravens are up against the salary cap for 2014, but there are ways to make the money work.

Torrey Smith caught three passes for 27 yards in Week 17 at Cincinnati.

Smith was targeted seven times on the day, but he and Joe Flacco couldn't connect on any deep patterns. Smith really blossomed into an all-around receiver in his third season out of Maryland and was really one of the only bright spots on offense for Baltimore. He set new career-highs in catches (65) and yards (1,128) while scoring four times. The fact that he didn't score more was a bit of a fluke. Smith is the clear-cut No. 1 option in the Ravens' passing attack and has the potential to be a fantasy WR1 in 2014.

Torrey Smith caught three passes for 69 yards in Baltimore's Week 16 loss to the Patriots.

Smith had little trouble gaining separation and getting open against the Patriots' secondary, but was hurt by the poor play of a gimpy Joe Flacco (knee), getting badly under-thrown on what should have been two long completions. As it is, Smith has now been held below 70 yards and out of the end zone in three straight games. He enters Week 17 boasting a career-best 62/1,101/4 line.
