Ryan Mallett QB HOU 20 Days

Mallett agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract with the Texans on Monday, Mark Berman of Fox 26 reports.

Mallett's deal reportedly includes less than $2 million guaranteed, as he will be signed presumably as the backup to Brian Hoyer, who is also expected to ink with the Texans. Mallett started two games for the Texans in 2014, accumulating 400 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The 26-year-old has the arm strength necessary to be a starting quarterback, but has yet to prove good enough to maintain the role.

Mallett (pectoral muscle) is still undergoing rehabilitation but has done some easy throwing, the Houston Chronicle reports.

Mallett, who can become an unrestricted free agent when the new NFL year starts March 10, has expressed a desire to sign with Houston. And Texans head coach Bill O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith have repeatedly said they want Mallett back next season. So, there's interest on both sides. Houston's starting quarterback job is unsettled as we head into the new NFL year. Ryan Fitzpatrick is still under contract and Tom Savage (knee) is set to begin his second season.

Mallett's season is over after he suffered a torn right pectoral muscle in Sunday's loss to the Bengals, ESPN.com reports.

A tough break for Mallett in his second start for the Texans. Currently in the last year of his rookie deal, the quarterback -- who is in line to undergo surgery -- is slated to hit free agency this offseason, so it's possible that Sunday's contest may be his last one in a Houston uniform. In Mallett's absence, look for Ryan Fitzpatrick to return as the Texans' starter at QB on Sunday against the Titans.

Mallett played through a right pectoral injury during Sunday's loss to the Bengals, and he may need to miss multiple games, The Houston Chronicle reports.

Mallett is scheduled for an MRI on Monday, at which point there should be an update on his health. His second start went much worse than his first, with Mallett completing just 21-of-45 passes for 189 yards in a 22-13 loss. If Mallett can't play against the Titans next week, Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely get the start.

Mallett's completion percentage was down nearly 20 percentage points from Week 11, and things don't figure to get much easier in Week 13 against the Titans, who are allowing the ninth-fewest passing yards per game this season.

Mallett will draw the start at QB over Ryan Fitzpatrick when the Texans return to action against the Browns on November 16, the team's official site reports.

Per the Houston Chronicle, coach Bill O'Brien indicated that Mallett will be given a full shot to hold on the the starting assignment, with Fitzpatrick slated to serve as the team's top backup, and Tom Savage as the team's No. 3 QB. Mallett thus merits a speculative add for those looking to add QB depth, with his strong arm and the presence of wideouts Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins providing the signal-caller with some intriguing fantasy potential in Week 11, and beyond.

Head coach Bill O'Brien said he's considering a quarterback change, replacing starter Ryan Fitzpatrick with Mallet, the Houston Chronicle reports. The coach said Monday that the offense needs a "spark" and that he's evaluating everything, including the quarterback position.

O'Brien praised Mallett's work ethic and his knowledge of the offense after nine weeks of practice. "In practice which is totally different than in a game but in practice (Mallett) seems to have good command of what we're doing and he's come in here with good knowledge of the offense," O'Brien said. "He's been in this system for a while now and he knows the system and he's worked extremely hard in practice." Houston is entering its bye week, which would give O'Brien a couple of weeks to prepare Mallett before the team's next game against Cleveland in Week 11.

Mallett will get work during practice this week leading up to Sunday's game against Tennessee, but head coach Bill O'Brien is still behind Ryan Fitzpatrick as the team's starting quarterback, the Houston Chronicle reports. "We're going to continue to work with both of these guys in practice, and we'll see how it improves," O'Brien said.

The coach has had to answer questions about the starting quarterback after each of the last two games. Fitzpatrick has thrown seven interceptions (tied 3rd) and ranks 22nd in terms of quarterback rating. In responding to questions about what it would take for Mallett to get some playing time, O'Brien responded that while Mallett has a better grasp of the offense after seven weeks, he needs to become more consistently accurate.
