Chargers SS Marcus Gilchrist suffered a concussion in San Diego's Divisional Round loss to the Broncos.

The brain injury is the first known concussion of Gilchrist's career. A former slot corner who converted to safety in his third NFL season, Gilchrist ranked third on the Chargers in regular season tackles (77) and recorded two picks with one forced fumble. The 25-year-old was poor in pass coverage, however, and will likely have to fight to keep his starting job in 2014.

The Chargers have formally converted Marcus Gilchrist to strong safety.

Gilchrist (5'10/193) is smallish for a strong safety, but he's always been a solid tackler and adds coverage skills to San Diego's backend. Strong safety has been a weak spot in the Chargers' defense since Rodney Harrison left in 2003. Gilchrist will be a major IDP sleeper should he hold off 2012 third-rounder Brandon Taylor. Taylor is a long shot coming off of a torn ACL.

Marcus Gilchrist is expected to compete for playing time at both corner and safety.

A second-round pick in 2011, Gilchrist has served mostly as the Chargers' nickel corner. He's been average at best and now the team has a hole at strong safety, where Brandon Taylor is coming off an ACL tear. GM Tom Telesco lauded Gilchrist's versatility Wednesday.

Marcus Gilchrist has been working as the first-team nickel corner during minicamps.

Gilchrist had an up-and-down rookie campaign in 2011, seeing quality time as a starter and also getting benched in the middle of a loss to the Packers. Although the Chargers are reportedly in the market for veteran corner depth, Gilchrist appears poised to start off this season as the No. 3 man behind starters Quentin Jammer and Antoine Cason.

The Chargers were forced to bench rookie CB Marcus Gilchrist after Jordy Nelson burned him relentlessly in Week 9.

Gilchrist was also torched in Week 8 by Jonathan Baldwin and Steve Breaston. "Obviously, Marcus was having a tough game," Turner said. "We decided to put (Antoine) Cason in." Gilchrist's confidence may be shot. He looked quite promising early in the season, but has now had back-to-back very bad games.

In his Week 8 start, Chargers rookie CB Marcus Gilchrist allowed 8-of-11 pass targets against him to be complete for 138 yards and a touchdown.

Gilchrist was victimized primarily by fellow rookie Jonathan Baldwin and Steve Breaston. The Chargers still plan to start Gilchrist over Antoine Cason against the Packers. If San Diego continues its coverage strategy of the past two weeks, Quentin Jammer will follow Greg Jennings all over the field. Gilchrist would match up with Jordy Nelson and James Jones.

The Chargers have promoted rookie Marcus Gilchrist into the starting lineup at right cornerback.

"All indications are that Gilchrist will start" on Monday Night Football against the Chiefs, per the San Diego Union-Tribune. A favorite of NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, Gilchrist will likely cover No. 2 wide receivers going forward, with Quentin Jammer following No. 1s all around the formation. The Chargers used Jammer to shadow Santonio Holmes in Week 7. Antoine Cason will move to the No. 4 corner role because Dante Hughes covers the slot.
