J. J. Watt DL HOU 5 Days2 Comments

Watt did not record a tackle, had one quarterback hit and scored a touchdown when he lined up as a tight end in Sunday's win over Oakland.

This was the first time we've see Watt line up on the offensive side of the ball. It's something the Texans have worked on in practice.

Watt had three tackles, two for losses, one sack and five quarterback hits in Houston's win over Washington in Week 1.

Watt, who signed a six-year deal in the week leading up to the game, made an immediate return on Houston's investment. In addition to hits and tackles, Watt blocked an extra point and recovered a fumble in the red zone.

Watt signed a six-year extension with the Texans on Tuesday, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports.

The contract ensures that Watt becomes the NFL's highest-paid defensive player. Through 48 career games, the pass rusher has been a devastating force against all comers, accumulating 36.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles, and six fumble recoveries. With rookie JaDeveon Clowney's similarly high motor opposite Watt for the first time this season, it remains to be seen what heights the 2012 Defensive Player of Year will scale in the years to come.

Watt was held out of Saturday's preseason game against Atlanta.

There's nothing to be concerned about here. This was just a routine week off in preseason.

Texans LE J. J. Watt missed Friday's practice after tweaking his knee.

"He's fine," said coach Bill O'Brien. "It's not serious at all. We just gave him the day off." Move along. Nothing to see here. Watt should be ready to go for minicamp and is a good bet to earn first-team All-Pro honors for the third straight season.

Texans exercised LE J.J. Watt's team option for 2015.

It's the no-brainer to end all no-brainers. Watt has emerged as a singular force in the Texans' 3-4 defense, winning Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2012. He's been a first-team All-Pro each of the past two seasons. Watt will make a paltry $1.907 million in 2014, but that number will skyrocket in 2015, absent an extension. Under the terms of the CBA, former top-10 picks get the average of the 10-highest paid players at their position in their option year.

J.J. Watt said his goal for this season is 20 sacks, 20 tackles for a loss and 20 batted balls.

Last season, Watt busted out with 20.5 sacks, 23.5 TFLs and 16 swats on his way to Defensive Player of the Year honors. They're unheard of numbers, but we wouldn't be surprised if he can duplicate them. Watt is still on the upswing at age 24 and played most of last year with torn ligaments in his elbow.

J.J. Watt is feeling soreness in his troublesome left elbow.

It's nothing overly serious, but it's notable because this is the same elbow that he hurt last training camp. He did go on to post 20.5 sacks and win Defensive Player of the Year honors. Watt, the clear-cut No. 1 player in IDP circles, expects to wear an elbow brace all year long once again this season.

Texans LE J.J. Watt revealed that he played the entire 2012 season with multiple torn ligaments in his elbow.

Watt suffered the injury early in training camp. Instead of undergoing surgery, Watt popped the elbow back in and played with a left-arm brace all year. "All the ligaments in there were torn, they were all gone," said Watt. "(I'm) looking forward to a 100 percent full healthy season." It's scary to think Watt won NFL Defensive Player of the Year playing at less than full strength.

Texans LE and 2012 NFL Defensive Player of the Year J.J. Watt stated after the season that he's "still learning what I'm doing out there."

"Just wait 'til next year," Watt promised. "I'm 23 years old. I'm two years into the league. I'm still learning ... My second year is not going to be my best year in the NFL, I can promise you that." Andre Johnson suggested in December that Watt is on pace to become "probably the greatest Texan to come through here." Expect Watt to attract constant double and triple teams going forward.
