The Kansas City Star reports Jon Baldwin "leads the list of candidates" to start opposite Dwayne Bowe for the Chiefs.

Jon Baldwin ran ahead of Donnie Avery as the starter opposite Dwayne Bowe at minicamp on Wednesday.

Avery ran with the starters on Tuesday, so the two are likely just rotating. Baldwin is entering his third season, and is reportedly "looking good" without pads on. However, this is the same narrative as last spring. The Kansas City Star recently penciled Avery in as the likely starter once Week 1 rolls around. Baldwin is going to have to earn his playing time under a new regime.

New coach Andy Reid was lukewarm while discussing WR Jon Baldwin Tuesday.

"Baldwin is kind of a tweener," Reid said. "He does have good, long speed, not great long speed. He's somebody that needs to continue to develop." The Chiefs have signed Donnie Avery to be their deep threat and Reid said he liked what he saw out of Dexter McCluster in the slot. Baldwin, a the No. 26 overall pick in 2011, is off on the wrong foot with the new regime.

Jon Baldwin was held without a catch on two targets in Kansas City's Week 17 loss to the Broncos.

In fairness to Baldwin, Brady Quinn was held to 46 passing yards on 16 attempts. Regardless, the no-show was just the latest in a long line of them for the Chiefs' 2011 first-round pick, and have 2013 shaping up as a make-or-break year for the 23-year-old wideout. Through 26 career games, Baldwin has just 41 catches for 579 yards and two touchdowns. Improving his own play next season will only be half the battle, as the Chiefs may not be assured of upgrading their bottom-three quarterback situation.

Jon Baldwin caught two balls for 64 yards in the Chiefs' Week 16 loss to the Colts.

He was targeted a team-high six times, flashing his big-play potential on a 57-yard gain. Baldwin has ultimately disappointed as a 2011 first-round pick out of Pittsburgh, though, and will try to put something impressive on tape for a new front office in the Chiefs' Week 17 game against Champ Bailey and Denver.

Jon Baldwin (illness) is probable for Week 16 against the Colts.

Baldwin could manage only two limited practices this week, but will be the Chiefs' "No. 1 receiver" against Indy. Baldwin should be zero-percent owned in redraft leagues.

Jon Baldwin (illness) was upgraded to "limited" on Thursday after missing Wednesday's practice.

Baldwin is going to play Sunday, but with Brady Quinn under center, a player who has caught just five passes since the Chiefs' Week 7 bye remains miles from fantasy relevance, even with Dwayne Bowe out for the season.
