Austen Lane DL CHI 5 Months

Bears signed DE Austen Lane, formerly of the Lions.

A 2010 fifth-round pick by the Jaguars, Lane appeared in two games last season, failing to record a statistic. He had three sacks across 17 appearances from 2011-2012. Lane isn't a cure for the Bears' defensive line woes.

Lions signed DE Austen Lane to a one-year contract.

Ziggy Ansah is nursing an ankle injury and the Lions were carrying just eight defensive linemen anyway. Lane, a 2010 fifth-round pick of the Jags, has been on the street since the Chiefs waived him at final cuts.

Chiefs waived or released DE Austen Lane, OG Rokevious Watkins, CB Kennard Cox, LB Orie Lemon, OT Steven Baker, WR Josh Bellamy, S Malcolm Bronson, S Greg Castillo, OL Tommie Draheim, LB Darin Drakeford, WR Frankie Hammond, CB Semaj Moody, FB Toben Opurum, OT Matt Reynolds, WR Rico Richardson and DE Ridge Wilson.

Lane was claimed off waivers from the Jags in June. Although a promising prospect, Watkins has let poor conditioning derail his career. Cox and Lemon are both special teamers.

Jaguars DE Austen Lane's 2013 salary jumped from $575,000 to $630,000 based on rookie-deal incentives.

Lane started nine games as a rookie in 2010, then was limited to seven games in 2011 before coming back in 2012 to make seven more starts. He leaves a lot to be desired as a pass rusher with just three career sacks, but Lane showed well against the run last year. After the Jags claimed Jason Babin off waivers, Lane was pushed back into a reserve role.

Jaguars DE Austen Lane (foot) has been ruled out for Week 13.

With Lane out, newly acquired DE Jason Babin could get the start in his Jaguars debut. Coach Mike Mularkey was noncommittal on Babin's role. "We just have to make sure he's on board with the calls and [stunts]. I don't have a concern with that," Mularkey said. Babin notoriously struggled to produce fantasy relevant numbers with the Eagles this season. Despite the change of scenery, it's tough to trust him in IDP leagues.
