Colt McCoy QB SF 13 Days

Colt McCoy has strengthened his hold on the backup job during OTAs.

McCoy was brought in to compete with Scott Tolzien. So far, the job has clearly been his. The 2008 Heisman Trophy runner-up has a 6-15 record and 58.3 completion percentage through three NFL seasons.

New 49ers QB Colt McCoy says he "feels great" health wise.

McCoy missed an opportunity to make a Week 17 spot-start thanks to a shoulder injury, but is 100 percent. McCoy also said he has "nothing but great" things to say about the Browns organization, and harbors no ill-will about their infamous handling of his 2011 concussion. McCoy will compete with Scott Tolzien for No. 2 duties in San Francisco.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer considers the Browns "doubtful" to find a trade partner for Colt McCoy.

His $2.35 million base salary is rich for a borderline backup-caliber talent, and no teams view McCoy as even a viable training camp competitor. The league is also well aware McCoy is not in the Browns' plans, particularly after the Jason Campbell signing. Expect Cleveland to release McCoy by early May.

The Seattle Times suspects the Seahawks could have interest in Colt McCoy if they deal Matt Flynn to Oakland.

Seahawks beat writer Danny O'Neil believes McCoy is "expected to be released," and could be signed by Seattle as a free agent. The Browns are currently trying to trade McCoy. They'll send him to whatever team offers up a draft pick.

Browns CEO Joe Banner said that Colt McCoy won't be released "as of now," but confirmed that the team is open to trading him.

McCoy is no longer in the Browns' plans after they signed Jason Campbell, and is currently being shopped for a late-round pick. ESPN Cleveland suggests the Texans and Saints as possible trade partners.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports Colt McCoy will be released or traded for a late-round pick "soon."

On the block all offseason, McCoy is officially out of the Browns' plans after they signed Jason Campbell on Tuesday. He'll likely be cut, as if there was a late-round pick to be had for him, the Browns likely would have already gotten it. However, a Browns source tells NFL.com's Ian Rapoport the team has "no plans" to cut the former third-round pick. We'll see. Small of stature with a pop-gun arm, McCoy is best suited to a West Coast attack. He'd make sense as a backup in Green Bay, where he's been linked in the past.

ESPN Cleveland says Colt McCoy is "undoubtedly" done with the Browns.

McCoy's noodle arm is not a fit in Norv Turner's offense. Brandon Weeden will be fighting off challenges from Jason Campbell and possibly a rookie, while the Browns try to salvage a draft pick for McCoy. Beat writer Tony Grossi suggests the Texans and Saints as possible trade partners, although we don't think McCoy would be a surefire upgrade on current Texans' backup T.J. Yates.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer says it's doubtful that Colt McCoy will be back with the Browns in 2013.

McCoy triggered playing time escalators in his contract that spiked his 2013 salary from $575,000 to $2.325 million. He doesn't fit the vertical passing offense, and the Browns don't consider him a viable starting option. Beat writer Terry Pluto considers Matt Moore an option to replace him. Derek Anderson has also been linked to the Browns.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer hears that the new Browns regime does not consider Colt McCoy a "viable starting option."

McCoy's pop-gun arm is an awful fit for new coach Rob Chudzinski's aggressive, vertical passing scheme. The Browns are expected to bring in competition for Brandon Weeden, so look for McCoy to be dangled as trade bait. Thanks to escalators in his contract, he's owed $2.325 million in 2013.
