49ers SS C.J. Spillman has been working with the first-team defense during OTAs.

Spillman was featured primarily on special teams last season, but still has developmental upside, and could be used in tandem with Donte Whitner on obvious passing downs. "We've had time to have a full spring with him," DB coach Ed Donatell said. "He's more mature as a professional, he's done a great job with our special teams and he's looking to increase his role. Things are great for him."

The San Francisco 49ers signed safety C.J. Spillman to a three-year contract with a maximum value of $6 million Tuesday.

49ers re-signed S C.J. Spillman to a three-year, $6 million contract.

The deal contains $1.8 million guaranteed. The Niners skipped over Spillman's restricted free agency to get him under contract through 2014. Spillman, 26 in May, led San Francisco with 19 special teams tackles in 2011 and has 36 over the past two seasons. On defense, Spillman is a backup strong safety.
