Patriots RT Sebastian Vollmer (knee surgery) feels "really good."

Patriots RT Sebastian Vollmer's four-year contract has a base value of just $17 million, with $8.25 million guaranteed.

It's a significantly below-market contract for one of the game's premier right tackles, and a steal of a deal for the Patriots. The big payment is a $7 million signing bonus, but Vollmer's base salaries are (relatively) dirt cheap throughout the contract's life and his New England future will be year to year beyond 2013. The max value, including incentives, is $27 million.

Patriots agreed to terms with RT Sebastian Vollmer on a four-year contract.

ESPN Boston's Field Yates first broke the news, then the Boston Herald's Karen Guregian had the years. After having no market in the first two weeks of free agency, it was appearing more likely that Vollmer would be back in New England. Offensive tackles were flying off the market in the opening two days of free agency, but Vollmer, among others, missed the boat on the big money. The Patriots in all likelihood are locking Vollmer, 29 in July, up for cheaper than they initially expected to. New England will bring back its entire offensive line, and Vollmer is easily one of the top right tackles in football when healthy. He missed one game in 2012.

The Boston Globe reports the chances of free agent RT Sebastian Vollmer re-signing with the Patriots "increase by the day."

Vollmer has had no market due to back issues and a post-season knee scope, and beat writer Greg Bedard says to not be surprised if a deal between Vollmer and the Patriots is for more than just one year. Right tackles Vollmer, Andre Smith, and Eric Winston all remain without teams two weeks into free agency.

ESPN Boston believes the Patriots' "best hope" to re-sign free agent RT Sebastian Vollmer is on a one-year deal.

With Vollmer facing questions about his back and the tackle market developing slowly, he's certainly nearing "prove-it deal" territory. The Pats would likely be just fine with that, but have also proven adept at locking players up at below-market value for multiple years at a time. Rolling the dice on a three- or four-year deal could pay off in a big way if Vollmer ends up staying healthy.

The Boston Globe wouldn't be surprised if free agent RT Sebastian Vollmer returned to the Patriots on a one-year deal.

Vollmer's market has been shockingly nonexistent. Vollmer and Andre Smith may be keeping tabs on Jake Long's situation; Smith's agent also represents Long. After Jermon Bushrod, Gosder Cherilus, and Phil Loadholt struck gold early in free agency, guys like Vollmer and Eric Winston may have missed the boat.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss thinks free agent RT Sebastian Vollmer's camp will be aiming for $7-8 million annually.

Reiss also doesn't believe any teams will be looking at Vollmer as a left tackle, which, if they were, would certainly drive his price up. Reiss' suspicion is that New England will let Vollmer walk "for anything north of $7 million per," and says the Patriots would likely go with Marcus Cannon at right tackle in 2013 over signing a different high-priced free agent tackle.
