Barwin announced his retirement Monday, Adam Caplan of Sirius XM reports.

Barwin floated out the idea of re-signing with the Eagles this offseason but an offer never came to fruition. Across 132 career games, the edge rusher recorded 368 tackles (272 solo), 56.5 sacks and seven forced fumbles in stints with the Texans, Eagles, Rams and Giants.

Barwin has been in contact with the Eagles about a possible return, Mike Greger of Heavy.com reports.

Barwin was cut loose by the Giants in January, though the veteran isn't ready to hang it up just yet. "I'm trying to come back and play for the Eagles," stated Barwin. "I'm training right now and I've talked to Eagles GM Howie Roseman and they're going to see if they need any depth on the edge."

Barwin is getting released by the Giants on Tuesday, Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com reports.

Barwin appeared in 15 games for the Giants this year, totaling just 12 tackles, including one sack, and four passes defensed. He's expressed a desire to play in 2019 and could get an opportunity as a veteran backup with another club.

Barwin (knee) was a full participant in Friday's practice and will play in Sunday's game against the Texans.

Barwin's practiced reps escalated throughout the week, as he was limited Thursday and then ultimately able to go through a full session Friday. He will now enter the weekend without an injury designation, so expect the linebacker to be a full go in Houston.

Barwin has been nursing a knee injury since preseason, and does not yet appear nearing a recovery. With Olivier Vernon (ankle) also questionable to suit up against the Texans on Sunday, the Giants could enter Week 3 missing two options at the outside linebacker position.

Barwin will miss Friday's preseason game against the Lions due to an injury.

The nature of Barwin's injury has yet to be revealed by the club, but the veteran linebacker will take a night off to rest it. When he retakes the field, Barwin is expected to serve as a pass-rusher again in 2018 and is a candidate to start opposite Olivier Vernon.

This addition makes an awful lot of sense for a New York team in transition to a 3-4 base defense, considering Barwin played under Wade Phillips in Los Angeles last season and also spent time in 3-4 schemes during stints with the Eagles and Texans. Working on a streak of five consecutive seasons with at least 34 tackles and five sacks, the 31-year-old linebacker figures to enter the mix for a starting job opposite Olivier Vernon. Barwin should have a good chance to beat out Kareem Martin and Lorenzo Carter, though an every-down role is probably out of the question.

A 2009 second-round pick, Barwin has ample experience working as both a 3-4 outside linebacker and a 4-3 defensive end, with five or more sacks in each of the last five seasons. He had 11.5 sacks for the Texans in 2011 and 14.5 for the Eagles in 2014, accounting for 47.7 percent of his total (54.5) through 126 career games. The 31-year-old had 34 tackles and five sacks in 14 games for the Rams last season while primarily operating as a 3-4 OLB. He'd likely spend more time with his hand in the dirt if he were to sign with a Cardinals team that's transititioning to more 4-3 looks under new head coach Steve Wilks.

Barwin is set to become a free agent after recording 34 tackles (26 solo) and five sacks during the 2017 campaign.

EDGE Analysis

The veteran edge rusher primarily slotted in as an outside linebacker in Wade Phillips' 3-4 defensive scheme and had a respectable showing. Barwin could return to the Rams because of his familiarity with the organization and the success of defense as a whole. However, Los Angeles wasn't an ideal setup for Barwin's virtual value, so it might take a change of scenery for him to show statistical improvement. His fantasy outlook will remain up in the air until he signs a deal.
