Darrius Heyward-Bey WR IND 2 Days

The National Football Post's Dan Pompei reports the Colts "will be trying to get" Darrius Heyward-Bey more opportunities than he ever had in Oakland.

Pompei adds that the Colts are looking to develop their vertical passing attack further this season, and part of their enthusiasm has to do with DHB's acquisition. The coaching staff sees Heyward-Bey as a "potentially explosive playmaker" who can get behind coverage. He and T.Y. Hilton will likely alternate in two-wide sets early on, but we'd expect Hilton to run away with the starting job opposite Reggie Wayne. Heyward-Bey will still see plenty of snaps as the No. 3.

Colts WR Darrius Heyward-Bey is being held out of OTAs with a sore hamstring.

DHB is one of many Colts players sitting out of OTAs with minor injuries. Coach Chuck Pagano emphasized that none of the injuries are serious, but like most teams they'll "Err on the side of caution," at this time of year. It's been speculated that Heyward-Bey will be involved in two- and three-receiver sets this season.

The Indy Star's "early hunch" is that Darrius Heyward-Bey will alternate with T.Y. Hilton in two-wide sets.

This flies in the face of ESPN's Paul Kuharsky, who said Tuesday that he didn't expect Heyward-Bey to "be in anyone's way." The end result will be determined on the practice field. DHB certainly has the natural skill set to push Hilton for reps, but he's shown poor hands and shoddy route-running through four NFL seasons. Hilton, meanwhile, had more touchdowns (7) as a rookie than Heyward-Bey did in his first three seasons combined. We suspect Hilton will earn the majority of snaps opposite Reggie Wayne.

ESPN's AFC South blog believes Darrius Heyward-Bey "won't be in anyone's way" with the Colts.

In other words, Heyward-Bey won't play ahead of T.Y. Hilton and will have to battle LaVon Brazill for No. 3 wideout reps. He's making just $3M on a one-year deal, $1.5M of which is guaranteed. Heyward-Bey and his 4.3 wheels will bring the speed element to the Colts' offense, likely in a situational deep threat role at first. He'll have to show much more than he did in Oakland to earn every-down snaps.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press thinks the Vikings could "try to get" free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey on a "low-cost deal."

Since being released by the Raiders almost three weeks ago, Heyward-Bey has visited the Colts and Lions. He left both cities without a contract in hand. The Vikings make a ton of sense as a landing spot for the former No. 7 overall pick, and he'd at least be a better field-stretcher than Jerome Simpson.

Free agent WR Darrius Heyward-Bey called the possibility of signing with the Lions "very appealing."

DHB left his meeting with the Lions on Wednesday without a contract, but it sounds like he's leaning towards accepting their offer over the Colts. Miscast as a full-time starter with the Raiders, Heyward-Bey will be a situational deep threat wherever he lands.

Free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey left his Lions visit without a contract, but hinted he'll soon decide between the Lions and Colts.

DHB visited the Colts on Monday. He isn't known to have scheduled any other trips. Heyward-Bey would be a situational deep threat in either city, but is a good fit for two of the league's most vertical offenses.

Free agent WR Darrius Heyward-Bey will visit the Lions Wednesday.

This is an intriguing fit for Heyward-Bey. The Lions are desperate for wideout help thanks to Ryan Broyles' torn ACL and Titus Young's meltdown. They also need a true burner that can take the top off the defense and pull some attention off Calvin Johnson. Heyward-Bey doesn't have great hands and isn't a polished route-runner, but he can certainly fly. The former No. 7 overall pick ran a 4.30 at the 2009 combine, the fastest time in his class.

Free agent Darrius Heyward-Bey will visit the Colts.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Heyward-Bey could visit as early as Monday. It's DHB's first known looksee since getting cut loose by the Raiders. Heyward-Bey wouldn't be signed as a starter, but as a replacement for deep-threat Donnie Avery. DHB was always miscast as a starter in Oakland, but could thrive in a situational role where he's deployed to take the lid off of opposing defenses.
