Jameel McClain LB NYG 1 Month

Giants DC Perry Fewell said the team signed LB Jameel McClain partly as insurance against an injury to LB Jon Beason.

Fewell said the Giants brought McClain in to start at outside 'backer, but they also viewed him as a player who could step in for Beason in the event of an injury. The insurance policy paid of quickly, as Beason injured his foot during OTAs and is now questionable for the start of the season. McClain may be able to play middle linebacker, but he is an underwhelming option. The Giants need Beason to get healthy quickly.

Jameel McClain is penciled in as one of the Giants starting outside linebackers.

McClain inked a two-year, $4.1 million deal with the G-Men last month. After MLB Jon Beason's re-signing, McClain will flank him at one of the outside spots. Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams will compete on the opposite side. Other than possibly Beason, there's no IDP value here whatsoever.

Free agent ILB Jameel McClain will visit the Giants.

McClain is visiting the Bills on Wednesday but plans to make the trip east to the Meadowlands. The soon-to-be 29-year-old played all over the second level of the defense for the Ravens during his time with Baltimore. He'd ideally play the middle. If the Giants re-sign free agent MLB Jon Beason, McClain could play outside.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, free agent ILB Jameel McClain is set to visit the Bills on Wednesday.

Rapoport added McClain has other visits scheduled as well. McClain came back from a spinal injury in 2012 to play 10 games for the Ravens last season. He has never been an above average linebacker, but has 55 games of starting experience and should not break the bank. McClain is our No. 11 free agent inside linebacker.

Ravens informed ILB Jameel McClain of his release.

According to reporter Jeff Zrebiec, FB Vonta Leach will also be cut loose. Both players had already been identified as candidates for release. The moves clear approximately $4.95 million in cap space. McClain put 10 ordinary games on film last season after returning from a spinal cord injury, but has 55 games of starting experience. He's unlikely to draw interest as a starter in the first wave of free agency, but could be viewed as a cheaper option once the big names are signed. McClain has never graded out positively as a starter in Pro Football Focus' ratings.

The Ravens are expected to release ILB Jameel McClain.

Baltimore would clear $3.2 million in cap space by releasing McClain. McClain suffered a spinal cord injury in Week 14 of the 2012 season but was activated in October and made ten starts for the Ravens, registering 52 tackles. However, he's not a playmaker, and the Ravens have 2013 second-round pick Arthur Brown waiting in the wings at inside linebacker.

Playing for the first time since sustaining a spinal cord injury in Week 14 of last season, McClain had six tackles in Week 7. He's come out of the bye healthy and will start ahead of Josh Bynes. Expect some kind of rotation initially.
