These sacks came at the end of the game to kill the Ravens' final drive. Gilberry is replacing Michael Johnson, who moved on via free agency in the offseason.

"We had talked to Wallace a number of times during the season about an extension," Pioli said. "We talked to him during the offseason and Wallace wasn't ready to make a move and wasn't ready to do anything. He wanted to see what his market was."

Noticeably bigger in the upper body this year, Gilberry has been "almost unstoppable" rushing the passer off the edge. Beat writer Bob Gretz noted that every offensive tackle on the roster has been embarrassed "at least once" by Gilberry's power rush. The situational pass rusher finished second only to Tamba Hali with seven sacks last year.

Coordinator Romeo Crennel smartly limited Gilberry to a pass-rushing specialist role, and the 26-year-old emerged as one of two 3-4 defensive ends to produce 40 or more "quarterback disruptions" in 2010. He'll play the same role this season.
