Giants released RB Ryan Torain. 27-year-old Torain was beaten out for a roster spot by seventh-round flier pick Michael Cox. Torain is clearly on his last legs in the pros.

The next running back into the game following Andre Brown's Thursday night injury was Ryan Torain. As ESPN New York notes, it's "not clear-cut" who will be David Wilson's backup while Brown (leg) rehabs. Reporter Dan Graziano does say he knows the Giants like Torain as a pass protector. It's possible he'll start off ahead of seventh-round rookie Michael Cox and speedy Da'Rel Scott, but we wouldn't waste too much time handcuffing Wilson. Torain has been one of the most injury-prone players in the league throughout his career and Brown could be back in a month.

Potential playoff teams such as the Lions, Titans, and Cowboys could use depth at tailback, though Torain's per-carry average of 3.4 yards isn't promising.

Ryan Torain played on 14-of-64 snaps in the Week 16 loss to the Vikings. Even with both Tim Hightower (injured reserve, knee) and Roy Helu (knee, toe) sidelined, Torain barely played. He gained eight yards on four carries and is averaging 1.6 yards per carry on his last four attempts. Torain's NFL career is quickly slipping through his fingers.
