Josh Johnson QB SF 13 Days

After Blaine Gabbert's struggles in Thursday's preseason loss to the Ravens, Johnson could be back in the mix for the 49ers' backup quarterback role, the Sacramento Bee reports.

Johnson completed 6-of-8 passes for 63 yards and also rushed for 15 in Thursday's contest. While neither he nor Gabbert are considered polished passers, Johnson does provide the element of a ground threat to keep defenses honest. This style of play more resembles current starter Colin Kaepernick's style should he ever go down with an injury. This will be a situation to monitor for the remainder of the preseason.

49ers QB Josh Johnson took snaps at receiver in Tuesday's OTAs session.

The move was just a lark as injuries left the 49ers short-handed at wideout, but it could be taken as an indication Johnson's roster spot is anything but secure. Teams don't mess around with quarterbacks they're counting on. Johnson is competing with Blaine Gabbert and McLeod Bethel-Thompson for No. 2 duties.

49ers signed QB Josh Johnson.

DT Christian Tupou was waived in a corresponding move. Johnson played for coach Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego and was with Harbaugh's 49ers during 2012. He's well-versed in the offense and should have a real shot at No. 2 duties over Blaine Gabbert and McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

Bengals released QB Josh Johnson.

A six-year veteran, Johnson beat out John Skelton for No. 2 duties last season, but failed to attempt a single pass behind Andy Dalton. He became expendable after the Bengals signed Jason Campbell and drafted A.J. McCarron. Johnson will look to latch on elsewhere as a No. 3 quarterback.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports Josh Johnson has a "pretty big lead" on John Skelton for the Bengals' No. 2 quarterback job.

The Enquirer named Johnson one of its five "standout" players through the first week of training camp, praising his command of the playbook and his ability to throw the deep ball. Both he and Skelton have big-time arms, but Johnson's experience in a West Coast offense is really showing. The preseason will tell us more.

Josh Johnson QB SF Jul 09 '13 considers Josh Johnson the favorite over John Skelton to back up Andy Dalton.

Skelton has attempted 425 more career passes than Johnson, but reporter Geoff Hobson believes Johnson's scrambling ability and experience in the West Coast Offense makes him a slight favorite. Both quarterbacks have big arms. Dalton hasn't missed a start in two seasons, so whomever wins isn't going to be in for many snaps.

Josh Johnson reportedly has a slight advantage in the Bengals' backup quarterback battle.

Johnson is competing with John Skelton and Zac Robinson. He has a leg up thanks to his previous knowledge of the West Coast scheme Jay Gruden runs. Note that Andy Dalton hasn't missed a game in his two-year NFL career.

Bengals signed QB Josh Johnson to a two-year contract.

Johnson worked out for the Bengals last week. It's Cincinnati's first outside-the-organization free-agent signing of the offseason. Johnson spent last summer with the 49ers, but he was part of their final cuts. He was then signed by the Browns in Week 17 and played one snap, losing a fumble on a sack. The Bengals likely aren't done at the quarterback spot.

The Bengals worked out free agent QB Josh Johnson on Thursday.

Johnson was out of the league until the Browns picked him up as an emergency backup heading into Week 17 last season. He played one snap and was strip-sacked. Johnson has a good arm and has ties to Bengals OC Jay Gruden from their Tampa Bay days. He's also very athletic with a 4.55 forty time.

The Sacramento Bee suggests the 49ers as a possible landing spot for free agent QB Josh Johnson.

Johnson spent last offseason with the Niners before getting dumped at final cuts. Now that Alex Smith is gone and Colin Kaepernick is the starter, they could be looking for an athletic backup and cheap upgrade on Scott Tolzien. Johnson would fit the bill.
