ESPN's Ed Werder confirms the Cowboys are "negotiating a multi-year deal" with OLB Anthony Spencer.

Spencer's $10.627 million guaranteed base salary is an albatross on Dallas' already pinched salary cap. Signing him to a long-term term deal would free up enough room to at least get the Cowboys' draft class signed. On an extension, Spencer figures to use Paul Kruger's five-year, $40.5 million deal as a target.

The Cowboys will meet with OLB Anthony Spencer to discuss a long-term contract this week.

Spencer currently weighs $10.627 million in Dallas' salary cap, and the Cowboys could clear up some room by extending him. Spencer signed his tender last week. Agent Jordan Woy is optimistic a long-term agreement can be reached.

Cowboys signed franchise player Anthony Spencer to a one-year, $10.627 million contract.

The move locks in Spencer's $10.627 million salary, and makes him available for trade. Although there had been noise about the Cowboys potentially shopping a player that will move from defensive end to outside linebacker in new DC Monte Kiffin's 4-3 scheme, it's reportedly a minuscule possibility. The sides now have until July 15 to reach a long-term agreement. Considering owner Jerry Jones' affinity for his own players, we wouldn't rule a deal out.

The agent for Cowboys franchise player Anthony Spencer says his client will sign his one-year franchise tender "early next week."

Agent Jordan Woy reps both Spencer and Bears franchise player Henry Melton, and wrote on Twitter Friday that each player has "accepted" his franchise tag. Spencer will immediately sign on the dotted line, and the sides will work toward a long-term contract. Signing the tag will guarantee Spencer $10.6 million for the 2013 season, regardless of whether a multi-year deal is reached.

ESPN's Ed Werder says the Cowboys "do not intend to trade" franchise player Anthony Spencer.

Reports have surfaced in the last two days that Dallas is "open" to trading Spencer, but we agree with Werder and don't see it happening. Spencer and the Cowboys will try to come together on a long-term deal by July 15, but if not, he'll play out his second-straight year on the tag and look for a long-term deal in 2014.

The Cowboys haven't approached franchise player Anthony Spencer's agent about a potential trade.

The Cowboys are supposedly open to dealing a player they went to great lengths to keep, but it's extremely unlikely to happen. Ineligible to be franchise tagged again next offseason, Spencer will finally have the ability to land the long-term deal he's sought the past two years. That is, if he doesn't reach one with the Cowboys before the mid-July deadline.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Cowboys are open to trading franchise player Anthony Spencer.

Per Rapoport, the Cowboys "would be happy" to keep Spencer, but aren't against seeing what he could fetch in a market low on pass rushers. We seriously doubt the Cowboys - who go for it every season - would deal Spencer after going to great lengths to clear the necessary cap space to franchise him for the second consecutive season.
