Jets assigned the franchise tag to K Nick Folk.
The Jets cleared a ton of salary cap room under first-year GM John Idzik in 2013, impressively and quickly cleansing themselves of the Mike Tannenbaum era. Thus, they're able to commit roughly $3.4 million in cap space to Folk, who banged home 33-of-36 field goal tries last season. The sides will likely now work on a long-term agreement. Folk turned 29 in November.

That includes an 11-of-11 mark from 40-49 yards and three straight games with at least three makes. He leads the NFL in field goals made. The piping-hot Folk will be a top-10 fantasy kicking option when the Jets come out of their bye at Buffalo in Week 10.

Jets K Nick Folk has six game-winning field goals since 2010.
Folk's latest triumph was a 43-yarder as time expired to beat the Falcons Monday night. He also beat the Bucs in Week 1 with a 48-yard boot. Folk is 11-of-11 on the year, including a 6-of-6 mark from 40-plus. Still, fantasy owners should be looking for kickers that play in more consistent offenses. The Jets have been held to 20 points or less in four of their five games.

Special teams coach Mike Westhoff suggested the Jets kicking job is no longer Nick Folk's to lose.
Westhoff concedes that Folk had the edge entering last summer's competition with Nick Novak, but that won't be the case with Josh Brown this time around. Westhoff was disappointed that the position wasn't upgraded during the draft, as the Jets were believed to be interested in Vikings sixth-rounder Blair Walsh.

The Jets will release Nick Novak, meaning Nick Folk has won the kicking job.
Folk has made just 48-of-67 (71.6 percent) of his field goals over the last two seasons, but hangs on to the job. We'd rather have a more reliable kicker in a more explosive offense for our fantasy team.
