The Denver Post believes free agent K Matt Prater is the Broncos' "strongest candidate" for the franchise tag.
This jibes with a January report that the Broncos were going to be "relatively aggressive" in re-singing their kicker. Prater would stand to make roughly $2.6 million under the franchise tag after converting four "walkoff" field-goal attempts and leading the NFL in touchback percentage in 2011.

The Broncos are expected to be "relatively aggressive" in bringing back free agent K Matt Prater.
Prater was scattershot on field goals between 40 and 49 yards, but he was money from over 50 yards. More importantly, no kicker had a better percentage of kickoffs not returned than Prater's 72.5. According to Pro Football Focus, only David Akers was more valuable as a complete package.

Broncos K Matt Prater was arrested last week for drunken driving.
The arrest took place on August 2 in Greenwood Village, and he was also charged with fleeing the scene. Prater has no previous run-ins with the law as an NFL player that we're aware of, so he should be able to avoid league discipline.

Broncos re-signed K Matt Prater to a one-year contract.
Prater has missed only seven of his 53 field goal attempts over the past two seasons. Unfortunately, the Broncos' new conservative offensive philosophy will likely prevent Prater from doing much damage in fantasy leagues this year.

Free agent K Matt Prater is interested in re-signing with the Broncos.
Prater is one of the four-year veterans expected to be declared unrestricted once the CBA is finalized. With a booming leg and increasing accuracy, Prater has been one of the most valuable kickers in the league the past two seasons.
