Cortland Finnegan DB MIA 8 Days

Finnegan could end up being the nickel corner, according to the Miami Herald.

The Dolphins are trying different formations in their secondary due to the suspension of safety Reshad Jones. Finnegan would still be the starting CB, but would move to the slot in nickel packages.

Coach Joe Philbin noted that all Finnegan needs to do to cement the starting cornerback spot opposite Brent Grimes is play consistently and execute his assignments, the Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.

The report adds that Finnegan picked off three passes during Tuesday's practice, which can't hurt his case. Coming off a season in which he was limited to 27 tackles in seven games with the Rams, a healthy Finnegan could re-emrge on the IDP radar. In his last full season (2012), he racked up 101 tackles and three picks for the St. Louis.

A Rams source informed Profootballtalk that now-Dolphins CB Cortland Finnegan never actually underwent surgery to repair his 2013 fractured orbital bone.

It's a slow period for NFL news. Last week, Finnegan called out ex-Rams DC Tim Walton by saying his defensive approach was "atrocious," and Walton was "in over his head." The Rams swung back at Finnegan today, saying Walton's game plan wasn't the problem, but Finnegan's play is partly to blame. (In our opinion, both Finnegan and Walton were awful in 2013.) The Rams basically went on to say that Finnegan used his eye injury as an excuse for his bad play. The Dolphins are counting on Finnegan to start opposite Brent Grimes this season.

Cortland Finnegan opened OTAs as the Dolphins' starting right corner, opposite LCB Brent Grimes.

Finnegan will cover the slot in sub-packages. He's the leader in the clubhouse to start at right corner in DC Kevin Coyle's base defense, although the Fins are hoping Jamar Taylor or Will Davis pushes Finnegan for early-down snaps.

New Dolphins CB Cortland Finnegan's two-year, $11 million deal includes $5.5 million guaranteed.

The deal includes a $2 million signing bonus, while Finnegan's $3.5 million 2014 base salary is fully guaranteed. He's due a non-guaranteed $5.45 million in 2015. It's a surprisingly-large commitment for a 30-year-old corner who has struggled mightily each of the past two seasons.

NFL.com's Albert Breer reports the "word is" that Cortland Finnegan's two-year deal with the Dolphins is worth $11 million.

Oh my. As former Rotoworlder Gregg Rosenthal put it on Twitter, "Finnegan should be getting calls from other players that want him to be their agent." Finnegan negotiated his own contract. He got new Dolphins GM Dennis Hickey to agree to an Ireland-esque deal for a declining veteran who was literally one of the worst corners in the league last season. Finnegan has an excellent track record, but that doesn't really matter when you're on the wrong side of 30 and coming off a calamitous year. Finnegan also struggled in 2012. The Dolphins are banking on Finnegan turning back time.

Dolphins will sign CB Cortland Finnegan to a two-year contract.

Finnegan was awful for the Rams in seven appearances last season and almost as bad during the 2012 campaign. The Dolphins are hoping that was due to a thigh injury and not because he's lost a couple steps at age 30. It's a risky signing, but one that shouldn't be too expensive. If Finnegan can rebound to anywhere in the vicinity of his All-Pro 2008 form, he'll fit nicely with Brent Grimes.

Free agent CB Cortland Finnegan will visit the Dolphins Friday.

Scheduled to count $10 million against the cap, Finnegan was released by the Rams last week. Consider his relationship with coach Jeff Fisher, it was a bad sign. Finnegan is ill-suited to be a starter opposite Brent Grimes at age 30.

Rams released CB Cortland Finnegan.

Finnegan, 30, was scheduled to count $10 million against the cap. St. Louis clears a much-needed $4 million in cap space with the move. Before landing on injured reserve with a fractured orbital bone in November, Finnegan was getting routinely beat in coverage as the Rams' slot corner. He signed a five-year, $50 million deal ahead of the 2012 season. Finnegan doesn't appear to have much left.

Cortland Finnegan (fractured orbital bone) is expected to be ready for the Rams' offseason program.

The question is whether Finnegan will still be with the Rams when OTAs begin. Finnegan was among the worst corners in the league last season, and will count $10 million against the cap in 2014. The Rams can clear $9 million in space by designating Finnegan as a post-June 1 cut. Finnegan's close relationship with coach Jeff Fisher means the sides could agree to a restructured contract.
