Thurmond is expected to start next to Malcolm Jenkins at safety, according to CSN Philadelphia's Geoff Mosher.

The Eagles moved Thurmond to safety this offseason, and while he was initially expected to compete for a starting job, it now seems he may essentially be handed one. Second-round rookie Eric Rowe will compete for a starting spot at cornerback, and the Eagles' other options to play safety are underwhelming. Thurmond's role probably won't be conducive to piling up tackles, given that he's on the smaller (and faster) side of the safety spectrum.

Thurmond, who is competing for a starting safety spot, continues to draw praise from head coach Chip Kelly, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. "Walt's done a really nice job," Kelly said. "He's probably been our most productive guy in the secondary in terms of pass breakups and strips and things like that. He always seems to be around the ball, so he seems like he's fitting in there right now. But again, we still don't have pads on, we're still evaluating guys with helmets and shorts and T-shirts."

The 27-year-old Thurmond has exclusively played cornerback during his NFL career, but he's expected to compete for a starting safety spot this season, with Earl Wolff (knee) assumed to be the primary competitor. Wolff has yet to participate in OTA practices in the wake of November knee surgery, whereas Thurmond seems to have made a full recovery from the torn pectoral that cost him nearly all of 2014. Even if he wins the starting job, Thurmond is unlikely to warrant consideration in most IDP leagues, as Nate Allen recorded just 62 tackles in 15 games while playing alongside Malcolm Jenkins last season.

Thurmond (chest) is playing safety at OTAs, Philadelphia Magazine reports.

Thurmond, who signed a one-year, $3.25 million deal in the offseason, has exclusively played cornerback to this point in his NFL career. It seems Chip Kelly has an affinity for DBs that can play both safety and cornerback, as Jaylen Watkins recently made the switch to safety, and 2015 second-round pick Eric Rowe could end up at either position. With Rowe currently working at cornerback, it looks like the competition for one safety spot will include Thurmond, Earl Wolff (knee), Watkins, Chris Prosinski and Chris Maragos. At the other safety spot, Malcolm Jenkins is locked in as the starter.

Thurmond (chest) signed a one-year contract with the Eagles on Wednesday, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

The Eugene-to-Philadelphia parade continues, as Eagles coach Chip Kelly will add yet another of his former Oregon Ducks to his talent pool. A member of the Seahawks' "Legion of Boom" during their 2013 Super Bowl run, Thurmond latched on with the Giants on a one-year deal, but never played a down in the regular season after he was placed on injured reserve with a torn pectoral muscle. He should be fully healthy heading into training camp with the Eagles, and should receive the opportunity to compete for a starting job. Thurmond has primarily played in the slot during his career, but at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, he possesses the measurables to battle receivers on the outside.

The Giants placed Thurmond (chest) on injured reserve Tuesday, Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports.

Thurmond underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Cardinals. He will need 3-to-4 months to recover from the procedure, and will not play again this season. Linebacker Dan Fox was added from the practice squad to replace Thurmond on the active roster.

Thurmond suffered a torn pectoral muscle during Sunday's game and will now miss the remainder of this season, reports.

Thurmond's first season with the Giants will be ended after Week 2, a disappointing development for New York's recently signed starting nickel cornerback. With Thurmond out, Trumaine McBride could fill his role moving forward, while Jayron Hosley (suspension) will be eligible to return in Week 5 to provide further depth to the Giants' retooled secondary.

The Giants are optimistic that Thurmond's pectoral injury is just a strain, the New York Daily News' Ralph Vacchiano reports.

Thurmond exited Sunday's game and did not return, leaving Trumaine McBride to fill in as the nickel corner.

Former NFL personnel director Louis Riddick calls new Giants CB Walter Thurmond III "special."

The Giants were able to steal Thurmond on a one-year, $3 million contract thanks to off-field and injury concerns. "He's a dynamite press corner, who is as good with his technique as Byron Maxwell, as Richard Sherman," Riddick said. Thanks to the Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie signing, Thurmond will likely open the season as a third corner in what is now a very deep unit. He shouldn't have a problem earning a much bigger payday a year from now.

Giants signed CB Walter Thurmond III, formerly of the Seahawks, to a one-year contract.

The Giants are arguably having the best free agency period, not that that necessarily means a whole lot. Thurmond, 26, has good size at 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds and can play the slot and outside. We'd tentatively expect him to start opposite Prince Amukamara. Trumaine McBride will be the No. 3 corner. Thurmond's market was likely affected by his November suspension.
