Branch (groin) has officially been activated from injured reserve, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

EDGE Analysis

Branch -- who hasn't suited up since Week 4 -- was one of three viable candidates Arizona could have chosen to bring back from IR. While it's unclear when he'll first be ready to play again, his impending availability should bolster a defensive unit that has surrendered at least 30 points in each of the past two weeks.

Branch (groin) returned to practice Wednesday, opening a 21-day window for his activation from injured reserve, Kyle Odegard of the Cardinals' official site reports.

EDGE Analysis

The Cardinals had three legitimate candidates to return this season -- also, Chris Johnson (groin) and Alani Fua (knee) -- but will opt for relief on the defensive side of the equation. While Tyrann Mathieu (shoulder) has settled into the slot cornerback spot (when healthy) in Branch's stead, the latter should earn snaps when defensive coordinator James Bettcher trots out six (or more) defensive backs down the stretch.

Branch was placed on injured reserve Tuesday.

EDGE Analysis

A safety for most of his career, Branch has mostly worked as a slot cornerback this season while Tyrann Mathieu has been eased back into the fold as a traditional safety. D.J. Swearinger replaced Branch in the slot during Sunday's loss to the Rams, but it may be only a matter of time until Mathieu returns to his hybrid role. The Cardinals can bring one player back from IR after a minimum eight-week absence, with Branch and Chris Johnson (groin) currently the leading candidates.

Branch left Sunday's game against the Rams due to a groin injury, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official website reports.

EDGE Analysis

Branch was limited throughout the week of practice and listed as questionable for Sunday's game, bothered by a groin injury that he aggravated during Sunday's contest. He's considered questionable to return, with D.J. Swearinger covering the slot in his absence.

Branch (groin) is active for Sunday's contest versus the Rams, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.

EDGE Analysis

Limited in drills this week due to a groin issue, Branch will look to uphold his share of the defensive snaps (73 percent) through three games this season, which has helped him put up the second-most tackles (21) among Cardinals defenders.

Branch secured 10 tackles (nine solo) and one pass defended during Sunday's victory against the Buccaneers.

EDGE Analysis

An offseason signee of the Cardinals, Branch has so far logged 78 percent of the defensive snaps, which ranks fourth among fellow defensive backs, while also picking up 61 percent on special teams. The multi-faceted defender should continue to receive plenty of run in a scheme that uses six DBs frequently and occasionally seven. Considering the usage and his veteran savvy, it's no surprise that he boasts the second-most tackles (16) on the team behind starting strong safety Tony Jefferson.

Branch was listed as the second-string strong safety on the Cardinals' first unofficial depth chart of training camp, Mike Jurecki of FOX Sports 910 Phoenix reports.

EDGE Analysis

Nothing is set in stone after a week and a half of training camp, but Branch's standing behind D.J. Swearinger isn't a great sign for his prospects after inking a two-year deal in the offseason. In the end, whoever is handed the job next to Tyrann Mathieu (knee), when healthy, will hold sway in IDP formats.

The Cardinals and Branch agreed to terms of a two-year contract Wednesday, Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports.

EDGE Analysis

After opening his career with three 100-tackle campaigns in five seasons with the Raiders, Branch sustained debilitating injuries in both 2013 and 2014, namely a fractured fibula and broken foot. Handed a one-year contract from the Chiefs last March, he totaled 43 tackles (35 solo), two defensive touchdowns, one interception, one sack, and one fumble recovery, while logging 39 percent of the defensive snaps. With the potential to earn $10 million over the course of his upcoming contract, the Cardinals may have promised him the nominal starting job at strong safety.

Branch has reached a one-year agreement with the Chiefs, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports.

Still only 28 years old, Branch topped 100 tackles in three consecutive seasons from 2009 to 2011. He made a name as one of the league's better strong safeties, but his stock has dropped considerably after he played just five total games in 2013 and 2014. He should have plenty of time to recover from the foot injury that ended his 2014 campaign, and he projects as a starter in Kansas City. Branch still has impressive upside, both in real-life and IDP terms. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are now unlikely to re-sign Ron Parker.
