Mays will compete with Robert Blanton, Andrew Sendejo, Antone Exum and Anthony Harris for a starting safety role next to Harrison Smith, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Blanton started 13 games last year but lost the job in December to Sendejo. Mays' ability to play in the slot could give him the most snaps at the position even if it's given a committee approach.

Mays agreed to a one-year contract with Minnesota, ESPN 1500 am Twin Cities reports.

Bengals S/LB Taylor Mays is recovering from right shoulder surgery.

Doctors told Mays he couldn't do bicep curls after surgery. "As a guy with meathead tendencies, not being able to do curls - that was rough," he quipped. Mays' shoulder popped out of the socket on an October 27 tackle attempt of Bilal Powell, tearing the labrum in two places. Mays now considers himself "90 percent." The Bengals re-signed him to a one-year, $755,000 deal in March.

Bengals re-signed S Taylor Mays.

Mays, 26, earned a large sub-package role on defense last year before suffering a season-ending shoulder dislocation in late October. He can play linebacker in Cincinnati's dime alignments, and contribute in kickoff and punt coverage. Mays is unlikely to push FS George Iloka out of his starting job.

The Bengals are expected to move on from free agent SS Taylor Mays.

Mays saw extensive playing time as a rotational safety and nickel linebacker before going down with a shoulder injury in Week 8. With DC Mike Zimmer now in Minnesota, he faces an uncertain future with the Bengals. Mays is expected to be ready for training camp, but could be limited to one-year deals in free agency.

Taylor Mays is likely to see snaps at linebacker in nickel and dime packages.

Thanks to a run of injuries at the position, the Bengals have just five linebackers heading into Sunday's game against the Bears. Mays spent last weekend at the team complex learning linebacking assignments. "It's the same thing as when a safety inserts into the box. Some of the run gap fits are a little different," Mays said. "I've been picking it up quick." The Bengals can't afford any injuries to their starting trio of James Harrison, Vontaze Burfict and Rey Maualuga.

Bengals S Taylor Mays enters training camp on the roster bubble.

The Bengals are still waiting for Mays' "instincts catch up with his elite physical skills," and he's in a heated competition with George Iloka, Jeromy Miles, and rookie Shawn Williams for playing time opposite Reggie Nelson. Mays could end camp as high as a first-team safety, or as low as on the waiver wire.

Bengals S Taylor Mays played on just 22.8 percent of the defensive snaps in 2012.

Once Chris Crocker got healthy ahead of Week 5, Mays' playing time really went in the tank. He's a big hitter, but gets exposed in coverage and isn't a great blitzer. Defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer claims Mays will have a bigger role in 2013, but he'll have to earn it. The Cincinnati Enquirer expects the Bengals to use a high draft pick on a safety.

Bengals S Taylor Mays' 2013 base salary increased from $575,000 to $630,000 after he hit escalators in his rookie deal.

Mays won the starting strong safety job out of training camp but was quickly replaced after veteran Chris Crocker entered the fold in Week 4. Overall, Mays has been a bust since entering the league as a second-round pick out of USC in 2010 with the 49ers. He enters the final year of his rookie deal as a thumper who lacks coverage skills.
