With Antonio Gates suspended for the first four games of the season, there should be plenty of slot snaps available for Johnson, NBC San Diego reports.

Antonio Gates and Eddie Royal were the Chargers' main slot threats last season, with Keenan Allen and Malcom Floyd doing most of the work on the outside. Royal jumped ship to sign with the Bears, and Gates was talking about a reduced role even before he was suspended. Johnson is unlikely to match his production from the days when he was Buffalo's go-to option, but this is the best situation he's been in since 2012. He'll get most of the slot snaps in three-wide sets, and he also has the size to work outside.

Johnson, who sat out three games for the 49ers last December with a bad knee, is looking explosive in camp, the San Diego Union Tribune reports.

Johnson is said to be shaking loose from defenders with sudden zig zag moves and has caught a few red zone passes from Philip Rivers. Needless to say, being able to make quick change of direction moves while getting comfortable with Rivers is a great sign for Johnson. At worst, he will be a solid number three receiver in San Diego, but he has an outside chance to push Malcolm Floyd for starting time opposite Keenan Allen this season.

Johnson is signing a three-year contract with the Chargers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Johnson won't be the No. 1 wide receiver like he was back in Buffalo, but he should have a better opportunity than the one he got in San Francisco last season. At the very least, he'll be the No. 3 wide receiver for an offense that just allowed Eddie Royal to produce a 62-778-7 receiving line in that role. Johnson also has plenty of experience working on the outside, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him push Malcom Floyd for playing time in two-wide sets.

Johnson is expected to sign with the Chargers, NBC's Diane Marie Russini reports.

Johnson would certainly fill a need for San Diego, as the team is left thin at wide receiver in the wake of Eddie Royal's departure for Chicago. At the very least, Johnson would be the Chargers' No. 3 wideout, and he'd likely push Malcom Floyd for snaps in two-wide formations. This is one of the better scenarios for Johnson to rehab his fantasy value, following a year spent as the No. 3 wide receiver in a balanced offense.

The 49ers will officially cut Johnson on Wednesday, the National Football Post reports.

There were rumblings over the weekend that Johnson was expected to be released, and it appears Tuesday's signing of Torrey Smith to a long-term deal will consummate the move. Johnson, who caught 35 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns in his first season with the 49ers, will likely still receive plenty of interest around the league, but perhaps not in the starting role he desires.

Updating a previous report, CSN Bay Area reports that Johnson is not expected to be released imminently, though his standing on the San Francisco roster is unclear.

The previous report implied that Johnson would be released in the near future, but for now it apparently remains no more than a consideration for the 49ers, who aren't sure what to make of Johnson and his $6.025 million salary. Since the 49ers acquired Johnson in a trade, cutting him would carry no penalty, but perhaps the organization is loathe to cut an asset that cost a fourth-round pick just one year ago.

Johnson is expected to be released by the 49ers, Diana Russini of NBC reports.

Johnson was a bit of a bust in San Francisco, finishing the 2014 season with 435 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He'll hit free agency as the 49ers looked to clear some cap room.

Johnson had a disappointing debut with the 49ers in 2014, finishing with 435 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games.

Johnson was brought in during the offseason to add more playmaking ability to a slow 49ers' receiving corps. But he failed to do that, being used primarily as a safety valve for Colin Kaepernick for the majority of the season. He is under contract through 2017, so maybe a new coaching regime will find a way to incorporate the former fantasy stud.

Johnson was unable to practice all week, so it's possible that his season has concluded at this point.
