Johnson is signing a three-year contract with the Chargers, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Johnson won't be the No. 1 wide receiver like he was back in Buffalo, but he should have a better opportunity than the one he got in San Francisco last season. At the very least, he'll be the No. 3 wide receiver for an offense that just allowed Eddie Royal to produce a 62-778-7 receiving line in that role. Johnson also has plenty of experience working on the outside, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him push Malcom Floyd for playing time in two-wide sets.

Johnson is expected to sign with the Chargers, NBC's Diane Marie Russini reports.

Johnson would certainly fill a need for San Diego, as the team is left thin at wide receiver in the wake of Eddie Royal's departure for Chicago. At the very least, Johnson would be the Chargers' No. 3 wideout, and he'd likely push Malcom Floyd for snaps in two-wide formations. This is one of the better scenarios for Johnson to rehab his fantasy value, following a year spent as the No. 3 wide receiver in a balanced offense.

The 49ers will officially cut Johnson on Wednesday, the National Football Post reports.

There were rumblings over the weekend that Johnson was expected to be released, and it appears Tuesday's signing of Torrey Smith to a long-term deal will consummate the move. Johnson, who caught 35 passes for 435 yards and three touchdowns in his first season with the 49ers, will likely still receive plenty of interest around the league, but perhaps not in the starting role he desires.

Updating a previous report, CSN Bay Area reports that Johnson is not expected to be released imminently, though his standing on the San Francisco roster is unclear.

The previous report implied that Johnson would be released in the near future, but for now it apparently remains no more than a consideration for the 49ers, who aren't sure what to make of Johnson and his $6.025 million salary. Since the 49ers acquired Johnson in a trade, cutting him would carry no penalty, but perhaps the organization is loathe to cut an asset that cost a fourth-round pick just one year ago.

Johnson is expected to be released by the 49ers, Diana Russini of NBC reports.

Johnson was a bit of a bust in San Francisco, finishing the 2014 season with 435 receiving yards and three touchdowns. He'll hit free agency as the 49ers looked to clear some cap room.

Johnson had a disappointing debut with the 49ers in 2014, finishing with 435 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games.

Johnson was brought in during the offseason to add more playmaking ability to a slow 49ers' receiving corps. But he failed to do that, being used primarily as a safety valve for Colin Kaepernick for the majority of the season. He is under contract through 2017, so maybe a new coaching regime will find a way to incorporate the former fantasy stud.

Johnson (knee) is out for Sunday's game against Seattle.

With the 49ers offense a mess and the matchup highly unfavorable, Johnson wasn't in a position to capitalize in this game, anyway.

Johnson caught three of his his six targets for 28 yards in Thursday's loss to Seattle.

The six targets were the highest Johnson has received since week 7 against Denver. The increased usage was a result of the Seahawks completely shutting down the 49ers' top two receiving options - Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree - for the entire game. Johnson's usage is still too unpredictable to rely on in most leagues.

Johnson caught 3-of-5 targets for 41 yards in Sunday's 13-10 loss to the Rams.

Johnson had the third most targets on San Francisco, but posted modest totals. He remains an important part of the team's offense from a real-life point of view, although Colin Kaepernick has been spreading things around all season, making Johnson unpredictable from week-to-week.
