Matthews hopes to be traded or released by the Dolphins, the Miami Herald reports.

While Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson are no longer in the team's wideout mix, DeVante Parker, Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings have been cycled in to work along with returnee Jarvis Landry. As is stands, Matthews slots in as the Dolphins' No. 5 option at the position, an assignment that doesn't carry a ton of field time with it. Matthews -- who caught 41 passes in 2013 -- recorded just 12 catches for 135 yards and a TD in 14 games in 2014.

Matthews had 12 receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns in 2014.

Matthews is nothing more than a depth wide receiver for Miami and may not be back with the team next season regardless of what happens with Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace.

Matthews caught all three of his targets for 43 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason game against the Bucs.

Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace started, while Matthews and Brandon Gibson both saw significant work with the first-team offense. The Dolphins may not have a true No. 1 wide receiver, but they appear to have excellent depth, with Gibson, Matthews and second-round rookie Jarvis Landry all in the mix for playing time behind the starters. While Gibson is the favorite to see most of the playing time in the slot, Matthews appears to be hot on his heels, and Landry was drafted in the second round for a reason. Gibson caught two passes for 28 yards on three targets in Saturday's game, and Landry hauled in his only target for 26 yards.

Matthews caught two passes for 40 yards on three targets in Friday's preseason opener against the Falcons.

Though both of Matthews' receptions came from the arm of Ryan Tannehill, the 24-year-old wideout stayed in with the backups. Matthews only got the start because Mike Wallace and Brian Hartline were held out, but he did make the most of his opportunity. Matthews and second-round rookie Jarvis Landry are hoping to push Brandon Gibson for the No. 3 wide receiver role. Gibson caught both of his targets, including one for a touchdown, while Landry had a quiet first half.

Dolphins WR Rishard Matthews is "at serious risk" of not making the team.

Matthews has struggled during the early part of camp, and is no higher than the No. 5 receiver. He's competing with Armon Binns, Damian Williams and converted RB Marcus Thigpen for one or two spots. Miami has "privately questioned" Matthews' focus in the past, and he recently admitted to being late to team meetings. Releasing Matthews would create $556,597 in 2014 cap space.

Amid reports he's in the doghouse, coach Joe Philbin offered up some praise for third-year WR Rishard Matthews following minicamp.

"Rishard had a really good camp," said Philbin. Matthews claims he and Philbin "ironed out their issues" during an offseason chat. He admitted "being late to a couple of meetings, among other things." The Fins have a three-way battle at slot receiver, with Jarvis Landry pushing Matthews and Brandon Gibson.

ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker said WR Rishard Matthews is the "leader in the clubhouse" for the team's third receiver position.

The reports on Matthews this offseason have been all over the map, with some saying he is a candidate to be cut and others saying he will win the slot-receiver job out of camp. Walker falls into the latter category, citing WR Brandon Gibson's (knee) injury concerns and rookie WR Jarvis Landry's inexperience as reasons Matthews will win the job. Despite this report, we still see Gibson as the favorite to leave camp with the job.

The Miami Herald reports the Dolphins "haven't been happy" with Rishard Matthews for "tardiness, lack of attention to detail and other issues."

In other words, he'll have to have a monster camp and preseason to earn the Dolphins' final receiver spot. Matthews hopes a recent meeting with coach Joe Philbin helped his cause. "I had some (missteps) my first couple years being young," Matthews, who turns 25 in October, said. "They want me to be more professional off the field, as well as on the field. ... Coach Philbin sat down with me and gave me the ropes. We're definitely on the same page." Matthews is facing an uphill battle with draft picks Jarvis Landry and Matt Hazel added to the Dolphins' crowded receiver corps.

ESPN Dolphins' Reporter James Walker only expects Miami to keep six of the 11 wide receivers currently on the roster.

Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and the newly-drafted Jarvis Landry are locks to make the roster. Sixth-round WR Matt Hazel has a great shot as well. That leaves Rishard Matthews, Armon Binns and Brandon Gibson to fight for one roster spot. Binns is recovering from an ACL and MCL tear suffered last July, but the Dolphins are reportedly very intrigued by his potential. Gibson is coming back from a torn patellar tendon and Matthews is reportedly not a favorite of coach Joe Philbin. The smart money is one or both of Matthews and Gibson being cut.
