NFL suspended free agent S James Sanders four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Sanders, 29, appeared in 15 games for the Cardinals last season, making 19 tackles mainly as a special teams player. He visited the Steelers three weeks ago, but it has been his only trip of free agency. Sanders will be eligible to return to game action in Week 5.

Free agent S James Sanders is visiting the Steelers on Thursday. The Steelers lost backup safeties Will Allen and Ryan Mundy in free agency to the Cowboys and Giants respectively, so they're in the market for an experienced veteran. Sanders has started 56 games in his eight-year career, registering 19 tackles with the Cardinals in 2012.

Cardinals agreed to terms with S James Sanders, formerly of the Falcons. The 28-year-old Sanders started six of his 15 appearances in Atlanta last season, recording 41 tackles without an interception. The Falcons will view him as experienced depth with the capability of chipping in on special teams.

The Cardinals hosted free agent S James Sanders on Tuesday. Arizona is looking at Sanders as an upgrade on Rashad Johnson as a third safety candidate. He'd play behind Kerry Rhodes and Adrian Wilson with the Cards.

James Sanders has taken over for William Moore as the Falcons' starting strong safety. Sanders racked up 10 tackles in last week's game at Houston, leaving him with 32 in four starts. Coach Mike Smith concedes that he will have a tough decision to make once Moore fully recovers from groin and quad injuries. It's a shame the Patriots couldn't use him in late August.

Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder said James Sanders and Thomas Thomas DeCoud are still battling weekly for the starting free safety job. Although DeCoud is listed as a starter on the depth chart, Sanders started last week and played almost 90 percent of the snaps. "We'll keep the ideal of him and Thomas competing for the free safety position," VanGorder said. "I think it's a good situation to have." IDP-ers can move on.

Falcons agreed to terms with S James Sanders on a one-year contract. Renowned for his leadership, Sanders should be a good fit as a reserve safety and special teamer on a contender. He recorded 58 tackles, three INTs, and six passes defensed in 15 games and nine starts last season.

The Falcons will host S James Sanders for a free agent visit Tuesday. Atlanta GM Thomas Dimitroff is tapping his New England roots on this one. Sanders, 27, can play both safety positions and special teams. With the Falcons, he could be a third safety behind FS Thomas DeCoud and SS William Moore.

Patriots released S James Sanders. It's a mild surprise as Sanders started next to Brandon Meriweather in Saturday's third preseason game and recorded nine starts a year ago. But the six-year veteran struggled badly against the run last year and Patrick Chung is ready to roll as the starter. With a $2.8 million base salary, keeping Sanders around to battle Sergio Brown for the third safety job didn't make much sense.
