Royal said he and Jay Cutler have been doing all the little things that led to their joint success with the Broncos in 2008, ESPN.com reports. "It didn't come easy," Royal said. "It wasn't like we just got on the field and everything just happened. We put in the work, the extra time in the film room, doing all the little things so that it would pay off on Sundays. That hasn't changed so far. We're putting in the same amount of work -- if not more -- right now."

Royal's 2008 rookie campaign in Denver coincided with Cutler's final season with the Broncos. Royal has never come close to matching the 91 receptions and 980 receiving yards he piled up as a rookie, although he did emerge as a valuable slot target for Philip Rivers the last two years, averaging 54.5 catches for 704.5 yards and 7.5 touchdowns on 79 targets (8.9 YPT). After signing a three-year, $15 million contract that includes $10 million in guaranteed money, Royal is locked in as the Bears' slot man for three-wide formations. He should be a key piece in the offense, but Cutler also needs to spread targets to Alshon Jeffery, Kevin White, Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte. Royal is unlikely to reach seven touchdowns for a third straight season, but he could match or surpass his other receiving numbers, especially if White doesn't develop quickly.

Royal signed a three-year contract with the Bears on Wednesday.

Royal officially joins the Bears after spending the last three seasons playing for the Chargers. He will likely fill a slot role in Chicago like he did in San Diego, but will hard pressed to match the scoring output he posted the last couple seasons given the Bears' other red zone weapons.

Royal will sign with the Bears, NBC4's Dianna Marie Russini reports.

Royal will be reunited with Jay Cutler, just days after it was announced that Brandon Marshall, another former Bronco, will be traded to the Jets. With Marquess Wilson likely stepping up to replace Marshall on the outside, Royal figures to work out of the slot where he's always been most comfortable. One of the league's least efficient receivers for much of his career, Royal came into his own while working with Philip Rivers the past two seasons. Of course, expectations for production should be held in check, with the Bears still boasting an offense that includes Alshon Jeffery, Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte.

Royal had four receptions on eight targets for 95 yards and no touchdowns in Sunday's season-ending loss at Kansas City.

For the first half of this game, Royal was pretty much the entire receiving offense in San Diego, but Philip Rivers finally started to spread the ball around, as they tried to mount another second half comeback. Royal very quietly asserted himself as a solid contributor in San Diego, finishing the year with 62 receptions for 778 yards and seven touchdowns. On a very talented offensive team, Royal slots in behind Keenan Allen, Malcom Floyd and Antonio Gates, so he has a propensity to disappear at times, but he is also capable of making big plays and wound up with several solid games on the season.

Royal was targeted a team-high 12 times in Saturday's overtime win over the 49ers, leading the Chargers with 10 catches for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Royal was a crucial part of the Chargers' big second-half comeback, especially his 17-yard catch on a critical fourth-and-8 that kept San Diego's game-tying drive alive. Royal seemed to be the player who benefitted most from Keenan Allen's absence, so if you are in a league that plays through Week 17, keep an eye on Allen's status leading up to next Sunday's matchup with the Chiefs. If Allen is out again, Royal stands to benefit.

Royal caught 2-of-5 targets for 30 yards in Sunday's 23-14 loss to the Patriots.

Royal burnt the Ravens for a 9-81-1 receiving line in Week 13, but he couldn't do the same against a far better secondary Sunday night. He'll face his former team, the Broncos, in Week 15.
