Wolfe (ankle) did not practice on Thursday, Troy Renck of Denver 7 reports.

EDGE Analysis

Wolfe is dealing with an ankle sprain and seems unlikely to play in Saturday's preseason matchup with the 49ers. Darius Kilgo is taking reps with the first-team defense during Wolfe's absence. Look for an official update about 26-year-old's game status to come within the next day or so.

Wolfe was diagnosed with an "ankle sprain" following an MRI on Wednesday, Josina Anderson of ESPN reports. "It's nothing serious and if it was a regular season game I'd be playing," Wolfe said. "We'll see how I feel tomorrow."

EDGE Analysis

Wolfe was removed from Wednesday's practice session due to a left ankle injury, but ensuing tests have downplayed the severity. With a preseason game Saturday against the 49ers, the Broncos may exercise caution and avoid any risk with one of their defensive stalwarts. However, there doesn't appear to be any long-term concern with Wolfe's health.

Wolfe left practice Wednesday with what appeared to be a left ankle injury, Mike Klis of 9News reports.

EDGE Analysis

Wolfe hurt the ankle while going through a team drill against the offensive line and then went on to limp off the field. Eventually, he was carted to the team's facilities, where he's expected to undergo further tests. The severity remains unclear, but it's a tough blow for the Broncos, who have already lost defensive end Vance Walker (knee) for the season. Second-round pick Adam Gotsis saw extended reps when Wolfe left the field and could be in line for additional snaps moving forward.

Wolfe signed a four-year contract extension with the Broncos on Friday.

EDGE Analysis

Wolfe's new deal comes after he was suspended for this season's first four games, but came back and enjoyed the best campaign of his four-year career. To that point, Wolfe totaled 49 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 12 games played, emerging as a long-term option at defensive end along the way. With the ink drying on his new contract, Wolfe figures to enter Sunday's playoff game against the Steelers full of confidence.

The Broncos reinstated Wolfe from the suspended list Saturday, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reports.

EDGE Analysis

Wolfe is set to resume playing after completing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Wolfe started all 16 games for the Broncos last season, but it remains to be seen if he will reclaim his starting job out of the gate.

Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe has been suspended for the first four games of the upcoming season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, according to ESPN.com. Wolfe, who recorded 38 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 16 starts last season, said the violation stemmed from a medication he took during the offseason. "During the off-season I took a medication which is on the banned substance list," Wolfe said on Friday. "The medication is not a substance which would enhance my on-field performance in any way, and I genuinely was unaware that it was prohibited, but players are responsible for what is in their bodies. I will certainly exercise far greater caution in the future and will seek advice relating to the permissibility of any and all medications. I'm very disappointed that I can't help my team for the first four weeks of the season, but I look forward to a great season with the Broncos and can't wait to get back on the field in week five." Wolfe should be expected to return to his starting role when he returns from his suspension.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe has bulked up to 290 pounds after dipping below 260 last season while recovering from seizures.

Wolfe's second NFL season was ended by the seizure scare last November. Wolfe has 10 sacks through 27 games, but will have to fend off Malik Jackson for starting snaps this year. The Broncos are as deep as any team in the league up front with DeMarcus Ware, Quanterus Smith, and a healthy Wolfe joining Von Miller, Jackson, Terrance Knighton, Sylvester Williams, and Kevin Vickerson.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe (seizure) said he feels "better than I've ever felt."

"In my whole life I've never felt this good," Wolfe said. "It just shows I needed that rest. The body needed to heal. I have no pain in my neck. No doubt in my mind that I'm going to be better than I ever was." Wolfe looked like J.J. Watt 2.0 as a rookie in 2012 before falling off a bit in 2013. He should enter the season as the starting left end opposite DeMarcus Ware on the right side.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe declared himself fully recovered from last November's seizure, which ended Wolfe's second NFL season prematurely.

The seizure was brought on by a spinal cord bruise. Wolfe wound up losing 30 pounds, but has since regained 20 and is back near his playing weight of 285-290. "I'm ready to go. I'm going to be better than I was," he said. Wolfe had an outstanding rookie season before taking a step back when healthy as a sophomore. He's likely to enter 2014 as Denver's starting left defensive end.
