Denver Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe has been suspended for the first four games of the upcoming season for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs, according to ESPN.com. Wolfe, who recorded 38 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 16 starts last season, said the violation stemmed from a medication he took during the offseason. "During the off-season I took a medication which is on the banned substance list," Wolfe said on Friday. "The medication is not a substance which would enhance my on-field performance in any way, and I genuinely was unaware that it was prohibited, but players are responsible for what is in their bodies. I will certainly exercise far greater caution in the future and will seek advice relating to the permissibility of any and all medications. I'm very disappointed that I can't help my team for the first four weeks of the season, but I look forward to a great season with the Broncos and can't wait to get back on the field in week five." Wolfe should be expected to return to his starting role when he returns from his suspension.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe has bulked up to 290 pounds after dipping below 260 last season while recovering from seizures.

Wolfe's second NFL season was ended by the seizure scare last November. Wolfe has 10 sacks through 27 games, but will have to fend off Malik Jackson for starting snaps this year. The Broncos are as deep as any team in the league up front with DeMarcus Ware, Quanterus Smith, and a healthy Wolfe joining Von Miller, Jackson, Terrance Knighton, Sylvester Williams, and Kevin Vickerson.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe (seizure) said he feels "better than I've ever felt."

"In my whole life I've never felt this good," Wolfe said. "It just shows I needed that rest. The body needed to heal. I have no pain in my neck. No doubt in my mind that I'm going to be better than I ever was." Wolfe looked like J.J. Watt 2.0 as a rookie in 2012 before falling off a bit in 2013. He should enter the season as the starting left end opposite DeMarcus Ware on the right side.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe declared himself fully recovered from last November's seizure, which ended Wolfe's second NFL season prematurely.

The seizure was brought on by a spinal cord bruise. Wolfe wound up losing 30 pounds, but has since regained 20 and is back near his playing weight of 285-290. "I'm ready to go. I'm going to be better than I was," he said. Wolfe had an outstanding rookie season before taking a step back when healthy as a sophomore. He's likely to enter 2014 as Denver's starting left defensive end.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe says, in hindsight, he tried to return too quickly from his preseason spinal-cord injury, which caused his nervous system to shut down in November.

Wolfe had to be removed from the team bus ahead of a Week 13 trip to Kansas City after he suffered seizure-like symptoms. He didn't play another down afterward and was placed on I.R. during the playoffs. "My nervous system started shutting down," Wolfe said. "Terrance Knighton started yelling, 'Stop the bus. Stop the bus.'" It's a scary situation, but Wolfe insists he's feeling much better. The Broncos will be cautious with Wolfe, whose status is up in the air for OTAs.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe (illness) has been ruled out for Week 19.

Wolfe hasn't made enough progress from seizure-like symptoms to be cleared for football action. Denver's defensive front seven will be a shell of what it could be Sunday against San Diego, with mini-Watt Wolfe on the shelf and Von Miller (ACL surgery) on I.R. The Broncos have also struggled at linebacker.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe (illness) is being held out of this week's practices, but is expected to get in a limited session on Monday.

The fact that Wolfe is being held out this week after practicing on a limited basis for Week 17 is not a good sign for his playoff status. According to the Denver Post, it's "not looking promising" for Wolfe returning for the Divisional Round.

Broncos LE Derek Wolfe (illness) has resumed practicing.

Wolfe practiced Wednesday for the first time since suffering seizure-like symptoms on a team bus ride back on Nov. 29. He's not expected to play against the Raiders Sunday, but he does have a chance to contribute when the Broncos open their playoff run. The Broncos could certainly use him in the wake of Von Miller's ACL tear as Wolfe has four sacks in 11 games on the year.
