Howell's neck injury is not career ending, but it's not clear when he may be able to play, ESPN reports. Howell aggravated a neck injury last week that prematurely ended his season last year. He's visiting with a specialist and a next course of action is being decided. With Howell's injury, the starting strong safety job is now flux with Sergio Brown, Mike Adams and Colt Anderson in competition for the assignment.

Howell (neck) did not practice Sunday, the Indianapolis Star reports. While this injury may be minor, it's worth monitoring because Howell had his season end in late Novermber last year due to a neck injury. Howell is the leading candidate to start at strong safety but faces competition from Sergio Brown, Mike Adams and Colt Anderson.

Delano Howell is penciled in as the Colts' starting free safety for 2014. Antoine Bethea primarily played free safety for Indy last year, racking up 110 tackles behind the Colts' leaky defensive front seven. LaRon Landry was mostly a strong safety in 2013, though he did play "center field" often in the playoffs. Howell's role should be very similar to Bethea's, putting him on the IDP radar.

ESPN's Mike Wells believes safety is the Colts biggest priority in next week's draft. LaRon Landry is firmly planted in the strong safety slot, but there is a hole opposite him in the starting lineup. Former UDFA S Delano Howell handled himself well in three spot-starts last season, but he is best suited as a reserve. The top safeties will be gone by the time the Colts make their first pick at No. 59 overall, but Florida State S Terrence Brooks is a solid option that should still be on the board.

Colts placed S Delano Howell on injured reserve with a foot injury, ending his season. Howell had been sidelined since Week 6. Howell had been active for all six games before getting hurt, making three starts in place of an injured LaRon Landry. A second-year undrafted free agent out of Stanford, Howell will be back to push for a roster spot next summer. He's not a starting-caliber player.
