The Bills weren't going to let rookie Jonathan Williams go - and they need Reggie Bush for returns - so in the end it was Mike Gillislee beating out both Herron and James Wilder for a backup running back job.

Herron gained 17 yards on five carries and 49 yards on five receptions (five targets) in Friday's preseason loss to Washington.

EDGE Analysis

With LeSean McCoy (coach's decision) and Mike Gillislee (concussion) unavailable, Herron worked behind Reggie Bush and Jonathan Williams but ahead of James Wilder. Despite showing off his prowess as a receiver, Herron seemingly has little shot to make the final roster, as McCoy and Bush are perfectly adept pass-catchers. Herron could eventually draw interest from a team that loses its passing-down back to an injury.

Herron will join a crowded backfield in Buffalo, as the team currently has six running backs on the roster in a group that is led by LeSean McCoy. A product of Ohio State, Herron is no stranger to the franchise, as the 27-year-old played in four games for the Bills in 2015, carrying the ball 11 times for 37 yards. After getting released in November, Herron finished up the year with the Colts, averaging 3.0 YPC over six games to finish the year. He'll now return to Buffalo to compete for a roster spot as backfield depth.

Herron ran the ball twice for a total of four yards in Sunday's win over the Titans, finishing the 2015 season with 79 rushing yards on 25 carries.

EDGE Analysis

Herron came over to Indianapolis from the Bills for the final seven games of the season, primarily providing depth in the Colts' backfield. The 26-year-old will be a restricted free agent, and likely won't see much of an increased role if he remains on the Colts roster in 2016.

Herron rushed for 14 yards on six carries in Sunday's loss to Miami.

EDGE Analysis

Herron received his second highest total of carries of the season on Sunday, but failed to take any of them for more than five yards. Frank Gore has enjoyed a renaissance in Indianapolis and put together his second two-score game of the season on Sunday. The veteran should get the lion's share of carries in Week 17, but there may be plenty of opportunities to go around to the potential benefit of Herron. With the Colts in must-win mode and prepared to go with Option 4 at quarterback, expect them to ride the run against the Titans.

Herron had four carries for 16 yards and two receptions for five yards in Sunday's loss at Jacksonville.

EDGE Analysis

Herron looks set to get consistent carries as Frank Gore's backup with Ahmad Bradshaw (wrist) placed on injured reserve. However, he's not getting enough touches for viable fantasy value in most formats.

Herron had two carries for eight yards and three catches for 16 yards (on three targets) in Sunday's 45-10 loss to the Steelers.

EDGE Analysis

With Ahmad Bradshaw (wrist) placed on injured reserve, Herron is expected to serve as the top backup for the rest of the season, with his role including most of the passing-down work. The blowout nature of Sunday's game might have been a good thing for his involvement, if not for Pittsburgh's complete dominance of possession in the second half. Herron could get a few more targets in Week 14, as the Jaguars have been solid against the run but highly vulnerable to the pass.

Herron will be the backup running back to Frank Gore with Ahmad Bradshaw being placed on IR due to a wrist injury, ESPN reports.

EDGE Analysis

Herron was with the Colts until he was released in September. He then signed with Buffalo until he was released by the Bills in November. He re-signed with the Colts last week and is now the No. 2 running back. It's possible he could split any backup carries with Zurlon Tipton however.

The Colts claimed Herron on waivers from the Bills on Thursday.

EDGE Analysis

Fellow running back Zurlon Tipton was waived in a corresponding to make room for Herron on the team's roster. Herron, who the Colts had waived from injured reserve in September, now returns to the team to provide Indy with backfield depth behind Frank Gore and Ahmad Bradshaw.

The Bills have released Herron.
