Carter (shoulder) has been listed as active for Thursday's matchup with the Bills.

EDGE Analysis

Carter was active in Week 1 but never saw the field, and he likely isn't in line for much playing time against Buffalo unless an injury forces him onto the field for extended time.

Carter (shoulder) was a limited participant at practice Wednesday for the third consecutive day.

EDGE Analysis

Carter is considered questionable for the Jets' tilt against the Bills on Thursday as he continues to nurse the minor shoulder injury. He didn't see the field Week 1 against the Bengals despite being active, while the Jets could continue to play it safe and keep him sidelined Thursday. David Harris (shoulder) is also questionable along with Jordan Jenkins (calf) doubtful to play, so New York could be a bit thin at linebacker.

Carter (shoulder) was a limited participant in Monday's practice.

EDGE Analysis

Carter was limited at practice last week as well due to his shoulder issue. He ended up being active for Sunday's loss to the Bengals, but he failed to take the field. The Jets take on the Bills Thursday, so the short week is not advantageous for recovery time.

Carter is active for Sunday's game against the Bengals.

EDGE Analysis

Carter was limited in practice throughout the entire week with a shoulder injury. Deemed healthy enough to play, he'll serve as a depth option at inside linebacker behind David Harris and Erin Henderson.

Carter was listed as dealing with an undisclosed injury on Sunday, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.

EDGE Analysis

Carter blocked a punt in Saturday's preseason game against the Giants, one of the biggest plays of the game. It's unclear if he was injured during the game or afterwards, and he's without a timetable for return currently. The veteran linebacker has been playing with the Jets second team defense to this point in training camp.

Carter agreed to terms with the Jets, SportsTalkFLA's Jenna Laine reports.

EDGE Analysis

Carter has rare athleticism for a linebacker, but instincts, durability and general effectiveness have been an issue his whole career. It's possible that coach Todd Bowles could get Carter to overachieve, though.

Carter was released by the Bucs on Tuesday, Scott Smith of the Buccanneers official site reports.

EDGE Analysis

The 28-year-old will be on the hunt for a new team for the second consecutive offseason, after posting a career-low 47 stops over 14 games in 2015. Carter's Bucs stint got off on shaky footing when he was beaten out by rookie Kwon Alexander for the middle linebacker job early in training camp, a spot he was unable to regain until Alexander began serving his four-game PED suspension in December. Carter did acquit himself reasonably well in his starting opportunities, posting 28 stops and two sacks over three games. A solid tackler with sideline-to-sideline speed, Carter should find some interest in the open market, most likely during the second wave of free agency.

The Bucs are expected to release Carter, the Tampa Bay Times reports.

EDGE Analysis

Carter, a notable free agent signing by the Bucs last year, lost the team's starting middle linebacker job this past season to Kwon Alexander, and wound up with 47 tackles and two sacks in 14 games in 2015, including just three starts.

Carter tallied 12 tackles (five solo) and a sack in Sunday's 38-10 loss to the Panthers.

EDGE Analysis

The 27-year-old was outstanding in leading the Bucs defense in stops on the afternoon, and he amassed 28 tackles over the last three weeks while filling in for the suspended Kwon Alexander. He also impressively brought down the quarterback twice over the final three games, coming just one short of the total he amassed in his four-year Cowboys career. Carter was also second amongst the linebackers in sacks despite only starting the last three games of the season. Although he was signed as a free agent with the intention of having him man the Mike linebacker position in Lovie Smith's defense, Carter managed to keep a positive attitude after getting beat out by Alexander in preseason, and proved his worth in the latter's stead the last three weeks. A good tackler with sideline-to-sideline speed, Carter will provide outstanding depth in the middle in 2016, and could very well compete for one of the outside linebacker spots.
