Week 1 Insights fantasysharks.com Wed 9/12/12 9:06 AM24 Comments

Some fantasy owners play things far too conservatively when it comes to reacting and adding players to their roster. Adding and dropping players can be an art. You don't want to drop a player too soon and give up on a guy who can contribute to your team later in the season, but you don't want sit idly by waiting on a player to repeat his performance for half the season, before you add him. Just as important as adding and dropping the right guys is correctly utilizing the players who are on your team. Here is my take on some key Week 1 performances. Much has been made of Wes Welker's abysmal three-catch, 14-yard outing against the Tennessee Titans. Don't be overly concerned with the poor outing. Some will tell you that the emergence of the running game, the arrival of Brandon Lloyd and a tight end-centric passing game are working together to spell the end of Welker's position as an elite receiving option. I'm not buying it. Welker is a key part of the New England offense and he will be utilized plenty over the course of the season. The Patriots are notorious for tailoring a game plan specific to their opponent. Given the 34-13 drubbing the Patriots gave the Titans, you would have to say the game plan was effective. Rest assured that more often than not the game plan will include getting the ball to Welker often. What can I say about Mike Shanahan that hasn't already been said? Shanahan is generally hated in fantasy circles for his use and fickleness when it comes to fantasy gold (aka running backs). Alfred Morris emerged out of nowhere...well, Florida Atlantic...yeah nowhere, to rush for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Morris could be this year's free agent gem or he could be a backup special teamer in three weeks. You really just never know with Shanahan. I was not overly impressed with what I saw from Morris. He was effective, but unspectacular taking what the defense allowed, but not much else. Roy Helu and Evan Royster are capable backs who have carried the load in the past. Add Morris and see what kind of role he plays over the next several weeks, but if the opportunity to trade him high presents itself, jump on it. Rookie quarterbacks. Robert Griffin III may be unavailable in Week 2. No, this isn't breaking news. It's not even true, but some sports pundits would have you believe that Griffin III is due to be reclaimed by whatever foreign planet he is visiting earth from at any minute. Andrew Luck and Griffin III will be linked and compared for years to come. A shallow observation suggests that Griffin III is destined for a far more successful career than Luck. A deeper look gives you insight on the reason for Griffin III's Week 1 outperforming Luck. Luck was certainly no slouch as he threw for more than 300 yards and a touchdown, but his Week 1 loss was stamped with three interceptions. What is the glaring difference between Griffin and Luck? Simple. The running game. The Indianapolis Colts' struggles at running back have been masked for several years by the offensive genius of Peyton Manning. Luck was called on to throw the ball 45 times, while the Colts running game was limited to 15 carries and 63 yards. Griffin III's Washington Redskins, on the other hand, rushed 44 times for 153 yards. The offensive balance and ball control alone put Griffin III in a better position to succeed. The bottom line is that both quarterbacks have value on a roster, but expecting Griffin to be a weekly starter on the heels of one spectacular performance is probably a bit premature. Remember, it is only one week. There is still a long way to go. Make the right decisions and look beneath the stats to get the story behind them. This insight will help you shape your roster and weekly lineup so that you are able to dominate your league.

I picked him no.1 in my league. big big mistake. 49ers are looking to groom the next player in line. i am looking to unload him. he will bring value if i can get another receiver/RB for him of equal value.

brandon lloyd or vernon davis

mark_pundurs Sat 9/15/12 5:01 PM

Lloyd is the high-risk, high-reward play. Up-and-down career, but now with the perenially successful Patriots offense, and had a good game last week.

With Davis, you know exactly what you're getting; 2009 was the only season in his 7-year career that he caught more than 7 TDs. I've been let down by TEs too many times and now avoid them; your mileage may vary.

Start 3: Welker, Malcom Floyd, Heyward-Bey, Laurent Robinson, Ogletree? ...go!

DrDoom511 Wed 9/12/12 2:58 PM

Welker and Floyd for sure the rest of them are a toss up for me. Seattle defense is actually pretty good. Tough call on the last one.

Thias_777 Wed 9/12/12 5:44 PM

Welker, Floyd and Ogletree. Ogletree has a much better QB than both DHB and Robinson and even though he lit it up last week opposing defenses will still prepare more for Dez and Austin.

ssorokti Wed 9/12/12 10:34 PM

lit it up against nyg 4th and 5th cb!!!!! ppplat!

CaryNeumann Wed 9/12/12 12:45 PM

lets wait and see how he runs in the next few weeks. That 3.4 average won't help keep your job.

joegibbskins07 Wed 9/12/12 11:36 AM

when it comes to Alfred Morris, his insight is malfunctioning. the kid avoided tackles, broke tackles, ran right threw tackles, made great use of spin moves and jukes. the kid has talent that many other runners lack. if you watch the game, watch what he does, you would be picking him up in a hurry.

Riggs44R Wed 9/12/12 12:24 PM

I certainly concur JoeGibbsSkins! This guy doesn't seem to know his you know what from a hole in the wall! What's wrong with being "effective"? Look at a scrub like Mike Vick, he tries to make a "spectacular" play on every snap, instead of "taking what the defense gives him" and look at how HORRIBLE he is!

Welker, he'll have a game here and there but he's on his way out the door, they're going to do him like they did Randy, just not throw him the ball.

On one hand he says he wasn't impressed with Morris and then on the other hand he says, the "glaring difference" between RG3 and Luck was the Skins' running game, which was pretty much all Morris! He needs to look behind the stats to get the real story! The MEDIA will have you believe that RG3 had the better game but Luck is by far the better QB! Not to mention that fact that the Colts played Chicago's defense while the Skins played the Aint's defense! The Aint's defense that was bounty-less too. Looks like these guys can't play unless someone is offering up a couple hundred dollars for a big hit! Hahaaaa

DrDoom511 Wed 9/12/12 3:00 PM

He never said Morris was garbage he says you never know what Shanahan is going to do and that is true. Any veteran fantasy player will know Mike Shanahan is a fantasy killer.. Also he actually supports Luck against RG3 saying that RG3 had a better day BECAUSE HE HAS A RUNNING GAME HE CAN RELY ON AND NOT HAVE TO THROW IT 46 TIMES LIKE LUCK DID..

Riggs44R Wed 9/12/12 3:20 PM

Your talking about the Shanny of the past 3 years and listening to the media, about RG3 and Shanny, he wasn't a fantasy RB killer back when TD and Mike Anderson and well wait... here ya go....

Mike Anderson – 2000, 2005 – 6th Round Draft Pick

Tatum Bell – 2006 – (PLUS 921 yds in 2005)- 2nd Round Draft Pick

Terrell Davis – 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998 – 6th Round Draft Pick

Olandis Gary – 1999 – 4th Round Pick

Clinton Portis – 2002, 2003 – 2nd Round Draft Pick

Rueben Droughns – 2004 – Free Agent

Riggs44R Wed 9/12/12 3:20 PM

I am a Fantasy "veteran" and I knew most of that! ^^

DrDoom511 Wed 9/12/12 3:41 PM

This is stupid. The only ones that matter here are TD and Portis. Everyone else was a carousel and you know it. It dosent really matter to me were they were drafted dont know why you bothered to throw that in there but I guess you know youre stuff.

Riggs44R Wed 9/12/12 3:47 PM

Oooppssss, sorry!!! They were 1,000 yard rushers under Shanny at Denver. My bad my bad, I thought it said that, that's why I through in there that Tatum Bell had 921 in 2005, while Anderson rushed for 1,000 again for the 2nd time and 5 or 6 years older was he(Mike Anderson than when he did it the first time). TD he made known and Portis was a stud anyway but to make Olandis Gary and Reuben Droughns and guys like that 1,000 yd rushers is pretty good and it shows that he sticks to one guy.

TERRALICHHYMEN Wed 9/12/12 11:01 PM

wow those names bring back memories lol

Riggs44R Wed 9/12/12 11:34 PM

I know right, I almost forgot about Droughns, even though he was more recent than the others and I was surprised about Tatum Bell, I didn't think he ever had close to 1,000

DrDoom511 Thu 9/13/12 8:45 AM

I understand youre point. I agree with you. If Mike thinks you got the ability he will stick with you.

joegibbskins07 Thu 9/13/12 9:11 AM

Riggs and I are certainly on the same page when it comes to Shanny's RB's. people get so caught up in the frustrations of the press because the Shanny's play games with them all the time. its not anyone's fault that RB's get injured but that zone blocking scheme is very RB friendly but is not for everyone. for the ones that get it, its an easy 1k yard season! for a guy who comes from the Bill Walsh's west coast offense coaching tree, he sure knows RB's and the importance of their role. a few others coaches that tend to forget... Andy Reid and that other guy from Green Bay.

Mister_Manager Wed 9/12/12 10:50 AM

I predict a big game for Welker this week. With Arizona's blitzing defense, I bet Brady checks down to short quick routes all game long.

joegibbskins07 Wed 9/12/12 11:38 AM

welker wont stay down for long and teams will certainly be looking to stop the TE's. he will be a factor all season long.

wiseguy949 Wed 9/12/12 9:31 PM

shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this a buy cheap deal

Riggs44R Tue 9/18/12 1:49 AM

XXXXXXXXXX... WRONG! LOL!!! The ONLY reason Welker played AT ALL was because Hernandez went down, making them go 3 wide, forcing them to use Welker, while Edelman STARTED over him!

joegibbskins07 Tue 9/18/12 10:17 AM

yea, Hernandez going down is Welkers saving grace this season. his stats will be better now that the TE is out. Edelman started over him but in the heat of the game, Brady will go with his best friend if he is open.
